When the bump covers 90% of the width of the lane, why do drivers steer to the side so (here) the left two wheels go over the bump, whilst the right two don't. Surely this puts uneven wear on components, and is more uncomfortable for the occupants of the car then if the whole car went over the bump. Why do people do that?

because of weight distribution only one shock  effected by speed bump at a time and actually more of the car weight is carried by other 3 .. so less damage..  but this will be valid if you are not fast and not in a decelaration effect by brakes so weight transfers wont take place.. :y
