V6 - access to coolant xfer pipe
« on: 28 August 2012, 20:26:45 »

I'm contemplating changing my O/S exhaust manifold gasket and have been doing my research - so thanks for all the useful posts and to Amba who has sent me loads of info ......

I popped into a mates workshop today to find that he had a V6 removed from a car - so I had a good nose around the back of the engine to get the lie of the land ...

I had already realised that I would have to remove the Skuttle, Wiper assy, Plenum, HBV & pipes - but following my snoop can see that I'll also have to remove the coolant bridge and finally the oil cooler pipes as they can't be bent. That's as well as removing the coolant header tank, cruise unit and moving the OS bank HT leads out of the way ....

So, in addition to the manifold bits I'll also need Dowty washers (x4) for the bridge and washers for the oil cooler connections - plus a crows foot spanner (19mm) for the lower end of the oil cooler pipes. I'm assuming I can re-use the Banjo bolts in the bridge and cooler connections?

I'm sure I'll have questions about removing the OS cat/down pipe - but I'll save those for another day.

So - am I on the right page here guys?

Thanks - Rob

Hi Rob.

There's no need to remove the oil cooler pipes, skuttle or wiper motor. All I remove is the plenum, inlet manifold and coolant bridge. If you remove the two nuts holding the cat to the exhaust manifold, bolt holding the cat to the gearbox and undo the first set of exhaust support rubbers the cat will drop down enough :y

No problem Rob :y

I find a 3/8 10mm socket or 1/4 10mm socket will remove the torx bolts holding the coolant transfer pipe oh and put something sticky on the transfer pipe (I use cam cover sealant) to hold the small O ring in place when reassembling :y

I guess reading specs are in order too for this job? All done lying on top of the engine. I recall when I did my purge valve I ached for days afterwards  ::)

I found it so much easier with the scuttle removed as you can atleast see straight down the back. All the plumbing from the heater bulk head fittings and HBV all out the way and you should be fine.

It is just more fiddly with the 2 oil feed pipes in the way but with patience you can get onto the 2  bolts..I removed the oil feed pipes purely because I was resealing the oil cooler plate.

Good torch and mirror on a stick was worked best for me as easier to undo and do up something if you can atleast see it.

No need to buy new banjo bolts ..just dowty washers and o ring seals incase you do need to remove oil cooler pipes. They are only few pence anyway..unlike the dowty washers :o

scuttle and wiper motor out of the way is a big help - and removing them only takes two ticks
