HELP I am Stuck
« on: 28 April 2008, 15:31:40 »

Well ok i got the quotes in today to repair my gearbox and torque converter.

Well these are the options:

Option 1- Have been offered a gearbox from lee off the forum and i source a torque converter to go withit. price?????

Option 2 - Have been quoted £400 to have the box that is fitted to the car fixed and the torque converter reconed at £400.

EDIT: just had another quote com in £280 all in to fix the one on the car.

Option 3 - Have sourced a gearbox and TC of a P plate at a breakers yard that comes with 30days warrenty. £100 for the box and £60 ish quid postage.  its in kent.

i would love to get the one on the car fixed but when hubby found out it was going to be £400 notes he went mental. :( i can see his point

Stuck in a rut and dont know what to do. :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

Option 3 seems to be the best bet although 1 could be ok depending on cost.

£60 postage?! :o Wouldn't it be better to collect  - also saves breaking the poor postie's back! ;D

God i would have it if its got a torque converter with it! if not i could try and source a TC but most breakers wont sell them without the gearbox:(

EDIT: this is why i havent said yes to Lee yet. as his TC is for a 2.5ltr

His is a 2.5 as well......not sure that would make a big difference though.

I take it the £400 is if we take the box out and give it to them as oposed to giving them the car

Option 1- If the gearbox is Ok then fine. I would want to know where the torque converter came from too, as if that's full of crud from a dead gearbox it could land you in trouble. High risk strategy I'd say.

Option 2 - High cost but you know the gearbox is good. Sounds like too much money, tbh. Lowest mechanical risk though.

280 all in to fix the one on the car. -  still fairly costly.

Option 3 - P plate is an old car. I wonder how many miles? Warranty is all very well but you've lost a day of your time every time you do a gearbox change. Could get a better one cheaper I reckon.

Ideally, a 2nd hand gearbox and torque converter together that are known to have been cared for, the bush not mullered during removal from the car, etc would be the best option. If a 2.5 torque converter will work it opens up the options considerably.  I'm guessing if it physically fits but is different you'll just lose a little performance because it will have been set up for an engine that generates a bit more torque so your stall speed will be a little low.

I have just got a phone call from another breaker in southampton.

£190 +vat with 90days warrenty. its on a R reg with 110 on the clock. Car has had a back end sunt and is not cost effective to repair, they have only had the car for around a week to 10days, so its not been sat for long.

Jase is lookin at the replace route as it will only be one days mess about and its cheaper. then havin to find help for 2 weekends while the TC is away for reckon. i still have my ears pinned back for all your advice and Jase can have his opioin but i get the final say! ;D ;D

i imagine the ar25 ratios will be identical.  TC obviously won't affect ratios either.

ok so what you think is that a tc off a 2.5 will work on a 2ltr?

if i was to try it what would happen?

my engine blows up? how would it effect my lpg?

is it worth trying it and at what cost?
