whilst i was out with a few friends today,1 who is an ex british gas engineer,4k is the right price they charge, but we had a discussion about it and both agree it was way over priced,i did even ask if he might do a quote for the op but he hasnt got the time to do it and its to far for him to travel aswell, price around £1800 is more like it,dependant on boiler used.

18 months ago BG quoted me £9.5k for a new boiler  :o. The quote included an uprated gas supply and 35mm pipework. Basically an overspecced system.  ::)

Got a number of quotes and settled for one with a 5 year warranty on the boiler for £2600. Guy was with us all day everyday for 2 weeks as there was a lot of work due to pipework re-routing as the original system was badly laid out. I know the new boiler was a grand so was quote happy with the price.

Would nit trust them tbh. Spoke to my old man again and said @2k dependent on make of boiler  your boiler must have a fault else where as the flue shouldn't make it pack up.

My boiler has thrown a wobbly this week have heating on despite turning it off and no hot water. Parts arrive tomorrow :) double failure lol good thing for me is I don't pay to fix this house as it-shirts mod. This time next week all my stuff will be on a lorry :)

I still find it odd that a 10 year old boiler gets written off so easily. Parts must still be available. Unless a combination of high value parts have failed in it, surely the sensible option would be to fix it? :-\

I had boiler removed from the small bedroom and  into the bathroom. Just didn't like the idea of a boiler in a bedroom, regarding fumes and carbon monoxide.

I'm with Kevin on this one......  What is actually the problem with the flue? Is it working at the moment? Is it a regulation issue?  ???

Not sure I'd want a boiler in a bedroom mostly because they're noisy, but the consequences if it goes wrong, especially in the kids bedroom don't bear thinking about.....  :-\

Indeed. A boiler coming on at god knows when in the morning is that last thing you need in a bedroom.

This sounds so much like a "head gasket, mate" diagnosis from a poor mechanic. Diagnostic skills aren't up to locating the actual problem, don't fancy the job anyway, so you pick something expensive that will make the job a non-starter (the "faulty" inaccessible flue) and either get a really nice earner pulling it all apart and replacing it with something you're more comfortable with or the customer goes elsewhere.

Ask yourself what has changed with the flue that has been working OK for 10 years. It's a pipe that goes through the wall and ends. Granted, he might have spotted something that's not compliant about the current installation but, in that case, he should explain why he believes that and what action he plans to take to rectify it (and, for a 10 year old boiler, the answer is still not a new boiler, IMHO).

Good old British Gas. Chances are the boiler would be an easy fix, they just get a kick back out of selling overpriced boiler changes. £4k! Got to be double the going rate, surely? I'd get someone round you can trust for a 2nd opinion.

They got shown up on Watchdog for saying that parts were unavailable when local plumbers had no such problem sourcing the parts. It doesn't help the OP but personally I would go with a reputable independent rather than British Gas, just on principle.  :)
