As I already know the government monitors my internet use, here's one for the GCHQ weekend team.......Guess who's knobbing your wife this afternoon while your in work?

Who needs to spy, the muppets put all their info on Facebook, Twitter etc.

They can spy on me all they like so long as in the process they cop a few radical muslims who cares

As previously stated it has been going on for years.

A funny story:- The company I worked for replied to a government tender through their central purchasing department for computer equipment, and I'm talking Mainframes and Peripherals not the toys and novelties sad on your desk So we won the tender and were told the site for the instal was in Norwich, now in those days we needed air con, three phase power supplies, floor void ETC ETC. The upshot was we needed to use the hardware engineers to inspect the site, provide on going support, and us software consultants to provide support for the actual instal ETC ETC. Now we provided 24*7 cover with a maximum 2 hour response time and needed to have hardware and software engineers in place. We then had to provide the government with a list of personnel that would attend the site, which we duly did. A week later I went in my local pub to be told by the landlord that people had been in asking about my drinking habits, friends and associates, political views et al, strange thought I until they told us to go ahead and instal the kit and put logistics in place for Cheltenham.

I'd only been PV'ed to enter the GCHQ!!

Not surprised by that, and I suspect they delved into your background Cleggy to a greater degree than that. To enter such an establishment as even (or especially) as a contractor calls for maximum vetting.  I would not be surprised either that they continued to monitor you and all involved in the contract for a considerable time up to the time you would have completed the work, and beyond to see what information you guys may be passing on.

As a separate observation, and away from GCHQ, I know my father when a Chief Yeoman of Signals in the Royal Navy came "under observation" when he started the habit of walking into the HM Dockyard where his ship was.................with a copy of The Morning Star under his arm!!

My Dad was, and still is a raving Socialist (that is where I get some of my socialist principles from), but his close colleagues and friends at the time, on board ship, had to point out to him how his actions were stirring interest from a certain quarter!  He was persuaded eventually to review his policy of carrying that paper under his arm.........................and instead carried The Daily Telegraph to his ships in future!

Smuggling has always been and still is a highly profitable business. If you want to make criminals rich, just ban something or tax it extortionately. 

This is why sanctions are never 100% successful and rarely change the path the country's leaders have set it on.
