I think I'd be hesitant at buying any modern diesel with a DPF filter.  My mate has just had to get a new one on his Focus and it cost £800!!  :o  :'(
Yep. I won't even consider a diesel because I mainly do short runs. Shame really, but I think a lot of people who would consider one have been put off.

...
It's like any semi auto, lift off a bit before an up change and all will be nice and smooth, not a problem going down...... ;) ;) :y
 .....

It's slow speed maneuvering I find they struggle, the all singing all dancing VW DSG is no better

You should try an automated-manual Sprinter. They drive appallingly, as if the engine, gearbox and axle are each connected with rubber gears. And they kill clutches in no time.

And DSG is a typically German solution to a problem that didn't exist. Two gearboxes in one case for an faster shift? What was wrong with an updated/electronically controlled pre-selector gearbox? That were readily available 80years ago!

Don't forget that injectors or a turbo are equally likely, and cost even more. Or, you could have all three, which does happen. How about a clutch/DMF/starter motor as well? This is why respectable TDCi Mondeos are out there for under £500

But I already drive a turbo diesel, now with 93 thousand miles on it, got some prices to mull over, remaining.................... :-\ :-\ :-\

Don't think Mr vamps is going to be going into mr Johnson manor "lez" so why worry about euro 4 let alone 3,2,or 1. And all the other big conurbations eg Birmingham,Manchester etc are just waffling about it,due to the cost of cameras and use of the data base.

No good for you Vamps, you stated town drivng and as of 2009 (with some before this) they have a DPF (and the wanky Eolys additive tank which has to be refilled at 70-80k.....if its not split and leaked like many seem to!).

Run that around town and the DPF will go for a burton.

Based on the one my colleague's wife had, it would have melted most of the electrics long before any DPF issues surfaced.

Not nearly enough bhp for me personaly and Citroens tend to fall off cliff around 6 years old relaibility wise.

Not sure if this one made 6 years before he was desperate to offload it at any cost. Not just the unreliability, but, when something fairly commonplace does go wrong (and there was plenty of that) it seemed to be off the road for 2 weeks before the part arrived. We're talking parts like PAS pumps which really ought to be next day, surely? Utter, utter rubbish. If they were the last car in the world, I think I'd walk.  ::)

Because he currently has a euro 3 compliant engine which is basic and has no dpf, the ones he's looking at are euro 4 compliant and more complex with dpf. Hence the short journeys will give issues he's not currently used to  :y

Trying to warn of the issues and advise that modern diesels are only well suited to regular longer runs

Whoops. Must read more carefully, will agree with you 100% on that, short journeys will just kill a dpf filter in short order, lots of small diesel granny cars starting to suffer now,its a nice little earner for the dishonest exhaust trade :(

And there was me thinking my next car might be diseasel :-\ DPFs and fuel system issues are nagging doubts... especially given as it needs to be less than five years old :-\

Another big lazy petrol might still be the way forward :-\

Neighbours e39 educated me on diseasels. A series of pumps in line to achieve massive fuel pressure to achieve atomisation(?) from the injectors. Each pump is very expensive, as are the injectors as expensive as they are enormous. All to cope with almost 4,500psi fuel pressure.

Now turn that pressure on and off at speeds up to 6000rpm and the shock waves that causes through the system. Like my pipes in my house, turn a tap on and off and it bangs with the water pressure as they are loose in the boxing. Now do that at X000 times a minute and it becomes clear why diesels are such horribly noisy things, very expensive to make them quiet and sellable.

They may do 600miles to the tank, but what's saved in mileage is lost in up keep or selling on to buy new(er).

Add in turbos and dpf's and that tips the scales back to petrol and lpg for me. Unless your doing massive miles a day of course. ;)

As a family run about. Nah! Don't think so.

Trouble with the miles I do is that most are stop/start short blasts around town, about the most efficient way to destroy a DPF...
