... as Buster was not on a lead.

......

if Buster was in his garden why would he need to be on a lead?  ???

I think I'd probably be guided by what the vet had to say,but I do love the dog to bits!As far as Busters case goes I'm not sure that being on a lead is germaine to the incident. If the other dog has escaped from it's owners premises and attacked Buster then surely it's the other dogs owners responsibility?I know I'd certainly be seeking legal advice on the matter!!

Depends upon the circumstances. We used to have two yorkies and one started suffering at quite a young age from a collapsing windpipe so he had only about 6 months to live without a risky 50-50% chance of survival major operation only carried out by one vet in the country, where plastic rings were attached to the windpipe. Fortunately, he was insured as the final bill was the best part of £2000, but the operation was successful and it did extend his live by about 10 years.  :y :y :y

A couple of years back paid out nearly £5K to have one of our racing dogs shattered leg rebuilt (can't insure them for racing).  Never regretted it - she can still race, enjoys life and she recently had four nice pups.

one of my Spaniels has a pacemaker which cost £6000+.

Thankfully, this was an insurance job, but I wouldn't have hesitated getting it done if I had to pay for it. Not a moments thought.

Our dogs have always been as much a part of the family as our children so no prizes for guessing which way the argument goes for myself & swmbo! :)

I think most people who really care  about their dogs would shell out to save it's life, a few years ago we had a female Boxer who had a serious eye problem, it cost £3,000 to get it sorted , neither the wife or I regretted spending the money.I have my 2 dogs insured now & have had several claims for treatment over the years , some were covered & some were not . I personally would not think twice about the cost.
