Well, seeing as the lardarse council around here has made a pigs ear of trying to adopt out road, if a tree falls, a pothole forms, weeds need killing, or gritting, the residents just have to do it themselves. Yet we still pay the council £1800 a year. Apart from my usual moan of value for money to pay £1800 to have the bins emptied 26 times, do I rattle on...


However, I'm just the stupid kid from the local comprehensive, but if you live next to a river (or reclaimed land, or buy a house on a flood plain), but even I can guess what will happen in periods of sustained, heavy rain. Or if I moved into a house at the end of Heathrow's runways, I'd expect some aeroplane noise. Or if I moved into a house in Brakkers, I'd expect that needing anything on a Saturday afternoon, it would be a significant trip out


The government can't always be to blame. In fact, if you ignore the media, the authorities have had a bit of a success story over this. The number of homes that should have been flooded that haven't is in the order of 10,000%

Given the fact that the Somerset Levels are actually below sea level, what is an MP supposed to do about the laws of nature? Water flows downhill, always has and always will... After all MPs and quangos are people not Gods or King Canute

I wonder how the Dutch manage? 

I drove up the M5 today and between Taunton and Weston-Super-Mud there are a few rivers and drainage channels heading towards the Bristol Channel from the Somerset Levels.  I expected them to be raging torrents taking all that water down to the sea, but all was still and calm.... 

The Dutch have a shed load of practice, and no significant hills.

That's the point I made elsewhere... rather than trying to keep the water back, open the sluices and let the rivers drain as intended...

Chertsey, Richmond and Reading wouldn't be getting flooded if the lock gates along the Thames were opened

The Somerset Levels were first drained in medieval times so they are not new areas that have been built on.  So in theory we should have just as much practice as the Dutch and with the surrounding hills more expertise. 

I bet they're laughing at us over their Hieneken and edam cheeshe!

I made a concious decision to live in one of the high points in the town, for the very reason to avoid flooding (and Mrs TB insisting on a quiet cul-de-sac for the puddy cats). With the doom merchants claiming sea levels rising significantly, if they are even partly right, it was the sensible decision. IMHO anyway.

The downside of living here is, with austerity, the local Fire Service is now part time, part voluntary. Hence I was desperately close to losing my home completely, as you have seen with your own eyes.

If you live next to a field, I think you could be within your rights to feel it would be unusual for said field to catch fire. If you live next to a river...

If we installed wind turbines to pump water rather than to try and make electrickery, the Levels might be a touch drier...

Also worth remebering that the current UK population is  63.7 million ish, whereas in the 1300s it was a pifling 5 million... 530,000 people currently living in Somerset, against 151,000 in 1290. Those 380,000 extra people must all be living somewhere, so it stands to reason some of them will be living in houses built relatively recently in areas susceptible to flooding

Not just welfare but our tax pounds get sprayed about like they grow on trees!! 

Saw a report yesterday that DEFRA have spent £5 million culling Ruddy Ducks over the last few years!  Why?  Because apparently they migrate to Spain and mate with Spanish ducks and the Spanish don't like it!

Don't worry. Now the flooding is occurring in Civilisation and posh houses to boot, the government is doing something now.

250 year storm.So in coming years we will (probably) have a new Environment agency head , have spent billions on flood defence work that may not get used for another 250 years!!

Taxes are to support the needy.
If your flooded out, your needy.
If you have pot holes on your roads they should be filled.
If your house is near a forest on fire in summer, it should be protected.
If you have cliff erosion, there should be sea defences.
If you live on a hill there should be grit buns in winter.
