Oil cooler

Possible oil cooler failure.

Can you refit a good used one or best to fit genuine Vx or aftermarket?

Aftermarket or second hand bits is always a toss up between price, quality and the ease of fitting and how much hassle it causes if it fails.  ;)

A new cooler from Vauxhall will cost £200... Average price for new one from other motor factors and ebay around £150..... I was lucky as i got a 3month old stainless steel one for £65 delivered...

I fitted a used one i took out my other car i scrapped with a siezed engine , fitted easily with no problems just used new washers / seals etc ,a nd been perfect since and thats 2 years ago now.

It can be a treacherous thing to fit a used one as if it goes its a strip down and re do all over again plus flushing out coolant system... I only fitted my second hand unit as it was virtually brand new.

True it is a gamble....I guess you pay your money and take your chances...in my case i didnt feel the car was worth spending £200+ on it as i bought it with suspected head gasket failure so i had never run it myself....but...it was well worth doing, its a great estate car thats given me no further problems .... except the dustbin lorry ran into it so now need some new doors in champagne/gold if anyone can help!

my oil cooler has gone on the mv6, doing away with this set up it has as its the 2nd one now fitted in 2yrs, but i have sourced all the pipework and a oil cooler off a frontera 4x4 to mount it in the grill area, it wont sufffer the same probs again

i would think the pressure of oil is the cause, and the radiator is the weakest link, also take into consideration it is very thin metal construction, heating and cooling many times is going to cause fatigue somewhere in it

Pulled the one out of my 140K 3lt breaker, it is spotless so its going into the 3.2 next week  :y
As said, a pattern one will put you back about 160 quid plus P&P
The metal washers are 4 quid each from VX
The rubber washers are 4 quid for a bag of 5 again from VX
The sealing compound is 7:80 
All plus vat of course  :y

I can smell roses a growing ;D

First off Now Vauxhall have genuine oil coolers listed on EBay for £149, including washers, but you will need sealant.

They fail as a direct result of poor coolant maintenance, nothing more nothing less :y
