How vulnerable and pathetic we have become.
« on: 16 February 2014, 14:05:12 »

I saw a report on the news this morning about an attack on a power station/sub station in America. Middle of the night, miles from town a few gunmen jumped out of a truck and opened fire at various parts of the plant. They had gone well before any law enforcement officers arrived. Navy seals said that these guys knew exactly what they were doing, as the bits they were shooting at were the very same bits that they would go for in an enemies land. On this occasion they were able to reroute the power supply so no harm done.
But a man in the know went on to say that if several groups attacked several power stations simultaneously, they had a good chance of knocking out a significant part of North America. People, when left in the dark with no heating or communication feel very vulnerable and frightened.

My iPad has been messing about this morning. Apps telling me they don't know my location, yahoo mail deleting two of my accounts....pissed me right off, but got me thinking about how vulnerable and pathetic western society really is.

I reckon older people could cope much better than younger ones, and people in the desert much better than those in cities. We love our comfort and our tech but have they become the very thing that defines us?

Bunch of useless wimps really...aren't we?

I understand your point Steve but would analyse where we are in terms of resilience in a different way.

Technology in all its forms has brought development and creature comforts in massive quantities. The response in those countries who have most benefited from this process is to see their populace become less fearful, more confident and more prepared to trust in that technology.

When instances arise such as the one you describe then people will be concerned and will expect the authorities to respond rather than doing something themselves. However, if the public's questions are not answered satisfactorily then human nature is it initiate some action to protect your community. Genuine fear will produce a community reaction.

People in deserts or troubled developing countries will naturally be more accustomed to dealing with threats and on a far more frequent basis.

Move. Just like that. Then go to credit card, bank, savings accounts, amazon, iTunes, car insurance, pet insurance, friends, family to change my email address.
Don't think so.

Buy a domainname Steve. not expensive and not expensive to renew every couple of years. Use the email part of the domainname (this is what you give out as your email address) to forward to your isp's email server. You pick up your emails from your isp.
When your isp annoys you and you change isp's, all you have to do is redirect you domainname email address to your new isp's email sever

Simples  :y

BTW www.stemo.co.uk is not available  ;D

Thanks, Dave, but I still have a couple of alternatives. Gmail has always been ok for me, although I hear others don't rate it.

Yahoo was ok until the recent failed copy of Google.  Now it is utter shite and difficult to use.  Thing is I have had my yahoo email address nearly 20 years and it is too good an address to give up :-\
