Trouble is, the savings are only as good as the car...
My cheapest cars cost £100. Some were useable with the odd issue, others were better scrapped two owners previously. Sure you pay a premium when buying from a specialist or a main dealer, but that isn't always a bad thing imho

As a case study:
Example A:
A 2003 3.2 Elite Estate with 70k miles from RB £3995.
Example B:
A 2003 3.2 Elite Estate from a local Part Ex outlet £1495.
Replace worn out suspension, plus alignment £1000.
Four new tyres £400.
MoT, two advisories, £200.
Cambelt/WP, fitted, £240.
Full Service, parts/labour £200.
Coilpacks £160.
HBV £50.
Crank sensor £75.
Six months tax, £154.
Total: £2479 + £1495 = £3974.
You might save £800 or so doing it all yourself, but that's about what is required to be done to an unknown Omega in the first six months of ownership...
It's not a question of how much you spend, rather when you spend it
