Thought op would have left immersion on to make sure water was hot to start with, yep that will be the problem.not getting enough time to warm all the cylinder up after storage tank was drained.

It's not as if the hot water tank can have emptied during this procedure, so why would it be taking any longer than normal to heat up? :-\

And even if it did.....even with a boiler thats 35yrs old....a couple of hours with it on should be plenty of time for the boiler to heat the hot water tank up to temp and do the central heating  :-\

My boiler is 32 years old (getting replaced in a few weeks hopefully) and it takes it about 1.5hrs to get the hot water upto temp if doing the rads as well (about 45mins if only hot water only)

Anyway, took a long time for the hot tap to stop running / drain and I found out that the cold water tank was being emptied at this point.

Water from the storage tank was replenishing the water in the cylinder.

Update  :)

After all the advice I decided that I would do nothing else but allow a few days to tick over, and simply ensure that all valves were adjusted correctly and that all connections were made. I discovered a weep / leak at the hot tap (I'll be having words with fitter  >:() while doing so.
Anyway, since doing this things seem to have greatly improved.  I'm guessing the leak was actually helping in running off any remaining hot water.
So, fingers crossed,  all is well ......... until the next drama anyway  ;D

Thanks for all the advice and help  :y
