Career change ideas needed
« on: 27 May 2014, 19:37:43 »

I've worked in the health sector as a project manager for nigh on 20 yrs and am considering a change for a variety of reasons. I have no clue what direction to head in and less of a clue what different fields pay so would appreciate any ideas of which sectors my skills would transfer to or ( sensible  ::) ;)) suggestions of areas to consider that I may not have thought of. Really would appreciate any feedback as so long in one field has shaded my view of the jobs market!

I enjoy working in mobile, always new devices, phones etc on the way. Chromecast is latest we are working on  :y

I work on the streaming side, again always more powerful phones coming out.

Always something new  :y

Depends what you are after as far as job satisfaction goes, balanced against salary and what minimum you need to get by.

If cash is not in the equation, go for a quantum leap into something completely new that you see as a hobby/job.

If cash is a driver perhaps your skills need to transfer as well so need to pick them apart and confirm core skills and then submit CV's emphasising your strengths into such diverse areas as takes your fancy....

Word of warning, mate....
If you go down the route of Self Employed, make sure you make a record of everything. Especially any cash that you handle. Make sure everything that passes through the bank is accountable....even joint and private accounts (and that includes any cash for whatever).

I have had over twenty years S/E, and now, although I have been retired for two years, HMRC have decided to investigate me. I have nothing to hide, everything I earnt has been declared, but they are delving into joint and personal accounts as far back as 2009 so far. Even having to justify where swmbo brought something for daughter, and daughter paid her by cheque five years ago!!!!!!!!! >:(

Having said all that, I would not have gone back to employed status for all the money in the world. If you go down the S/E route, do your homework.
Whichever, best of luck for the future :y

There's not many jobs out there where you can start on 30K without the relevant experience. Perhaps you need a few bob behind you to really consider a big change.
What qualifications have you got. If you have a suitable degree, you can do a PGCE for a year and try your hand at teaching.
Don't dismiss it out of hand, it can be very rewarding and schools, esp. Primary schools, are crying out for mature, male teaching staff. My wife needs four teachers for September and can't find even one.
But you would have to spend at least a year training.

When you say "health sector" what do you mean ? Within the NHS or private healthcare or for a company providing goods or services to the NHS or private health organisations ?

If the first, consider the second. However in the second be prepared for pressure, however £30k+ is very feasible.

There's four words that don't go together "health service" "manger" "work". ;D. But for £30k+ stay in the health service+ pension :)

30K should be easy to get with X years of project management experience and given your in the health sector, I am assuming your Prince 2 Practitioner level.

How about train driver? They seem to get paid £50k. I think it's 4 days on then 4 off and free rail travel!

Depends which line. London to Bristol maybe looking at the top end of the pay grade. A door slammer across Kent your looking at almost half that.

Depends on the TOC you're working for ...

42K + basic here for an average 35-hour 5-day week.
Week off with full pay every 7-ish weeks, plus around 6 weeks annual leave entitlement. Any Sunday working is in addition to this.

If you get through the stringent assessment, it'll be followed by around 8 months training ;)

I'm in the wrong career...

Though having spent 19 years in IT I'd also dearly love a career change, if only something else paid as well..
