Well I'm sorry I caused so much dissension in the ranks, but nevertheless, there is much information in this thread for me to chew on, which I guessed there would be, as OOF is my first port of call for information on such matters.
Thank you very much gentlemen, you may now stand easy and have a beer or three. :y :y :y
But no red meat.
At least if I was allowed it, I could grill it and still have oven chips.
You bitch.

What do you think TBs mug of tea is stood on if it's not a bloody great server tower ::)
Finished it 10 mins ago, just as I got out of the bath. Tea balanced on one bath handle, laptop on t'other ::)

 . . . . . . . plugged into the mains ?    ::)

Have to, the battery is starting to go a bit Pete Tong again.  Still, it was a cheap £20 jobbie 2 or 3 years ago, so mustn't grumble.

Obviously, for all you gayPad owners (and gayPhone owners  :-[), be aware of todays CERT alert:

This is more for those who haven't jailbroken. If you have jailbroken, you've already lowered you pants and invited anyone on the internet to buttshag you. Same applies to Android rooting, you're asking to be rooted by all and sundry.

Locked down a bit too much by Android standards.  If going down the Android route - and I wouldn't if the OP is struggling with the intuiativeness of an iPad they already own - I think I'd be pushing more towards the Galaxy Tab or Google Nexus.

I cant say I can split either of them with respect to intuitiveness , they both have enough quirks to annoy you at times.

Bottom line is the OS is nothing more than something you transit through to get to the app you want to run.

The big issue is Crapple stuff is over priced and nags you if you don't have the settings how they want you to.

I suspect that this is why we find it a nuisance.  " Do it my way or not at all! Yah boo!" It seems to say. ???

That's why I always remove root after I've made the changes I deem necessary, but as Aaron says, it still requires the user to install a rogue app to start with.

Because crApple more tightly control the apps, and reject apps that do not meet their idea of usability, you end up with a more consistent, initiative platform. At a price (both financially, and app choices/restrictions).

Not got an iPad, but do have an Android tablet and a iphone. The geeky side of me likes the Android tablet, but I find the iPhone far less frustrating on a day to day basis.

If Mrs TB wanted a tablet tomorrow (she doesn't, rightly so, she understands a fast laptop is the way to go), ignoring price for a moment, it would be a gayPad, as she would smash an Android tablet in frustration (she has one as well ::))

That's the way to do it, but so many don't, and leave it rooted, thus vulnerable (very).  Your method, as long as the apps installed when rooted aren't compromised (either at installation or later in life), you should be reasonably safe.

I never install anything when rooted, in fact I only had it rooted to remove the factory installed crap I will never use (recovered 867 MB of storage), modded the dialler to include a call record button, and disabled the automatic SMS to MMS conversion that Samsung seem to inflict on their users.
I did also modify the config file for the DAC to give the volume control that "number 11" setting as it was clamped down far too much for my liking (probably to keep the "elf & safety" brigade happy).

Well that's blown it, for Christmas we have been given an iPad Air2 with logitech keyboard by daughter with more money than knowledge of her parents lack of, and disinterest in, modern technology, so now we are obliged to use it for Facetime (Ugh) and other things in which we have no interest.  Grrr. >:(
