Pete have you checked they are not supplying fellow students next door with gas (and electric?)? :-? :-?  As a student I know how "cold" young students can be and some of the tricks they can get up to!!

Hell's Bell's Pete. Look for the space heater's in the garden, yes running off the mains, my son was a student and the house next door to his, again full of students, had heaters all around the garden plus a big barbecue.

Mind you, you should have stayed   about not getting a gas bill.

Mate of mine moved into a new build house about 5 years ago.....got regular leccy bills, but never a gas bill. He did phone up BG once who said he wasnt with them, so he didnt bother...... 4 years later he sold and moved. He never did pay a gas bill in those 4 years

Ive offered BG £1500 told them, if i'd received regular bills I could have nipped it in the bud. They've asked me to put it in writing, so fingers crossed.

Well good luck mate....i finally left BG in March after problem after problem over 18 months.

My final gas reading was estimated at over DOUBLE the actual reading and my final bill of £55 once i disputed it as i firmly believe they owe me money has now rocketed too over £900  

After dozens of phone calls and asking energy watch to get involved (BG have ignored Engerywatch and wont reply to there letters,
Ive no idea what gonna happen now..bunch of bloody crooks.

I also left BG after a total mix up with charges etc, then got bills from them about 5yrs later too for gas & they wernt even the supplier ,tossers!  daughter got bills from them when they bought a shop "estimated of course"  but there's no gas mains in the shop they threatened to take her to court hahaha now that would have been funny   tell you they are bloody rubbish, when we get a BG rep at the door asking if we thought of changing to BG i can keep him there ages if weathers fine before i give him the you must be joking line

I remember some of the Gas Boards anytic's on That's Life years ago when they kept billing people for gas that didnt even have meters.
