I reckon the C20LET might well be heavier than the V6 (ref minifreek's post), especially with the turbo strapped to it - IIRC the LET is a cast iron block and the V6 is all aluminium..

Certainly the internets reckon they're both about 130-150Kg..

The 1.8 MX5 engine, by contrast, weighs ~120Kg with the 1.6 at ~100Kg..

V6 is an iron block and alloy everything else.  :y

Block is not very big on the V6 either.

Ah .. always thought it was all aluminium rather than a boat anchor!

Interestingly, many of the aluminium blocks are not much lighter than the iron ones as you have to add a lot of extra material to get the strength (which does help sound deadening also)

Brodie Britain Racing bolted a turbo to the original 1.6 when it first came over here.
Went rather well iirc  :D

Shame some retard has put tyres on it that are about half the section of the rims. ::)

Still, I like the idea.  :y

I doubt it's added more than 50kg to the front end weight, so I reckon it'd handle OK.

The tyre stretch boys will like that  :-\ Will make an interesting ride for sure  :o

small cars are choosen for a reason.. 30-50 kg is a considerable weight both for acceleration and cornering.. I wouldnt prefer a na V6..   and also even a high pressure turbo 1.8 engine would make that car uncontrollable

No way would it be uncontrollable with a turbo strapped to it, cem.. If 250hp+ in a mid engined MR2 Roadster with almost identical weight, with all the weight out back is controllable and fun (and I speak from experience here), a front engined rear drive MX5 would simply be a blast.. swing the back end around the engine and enjoy!

I agree that 50Kg is a lot in a 1000Kg car, but let's face it.. the difference between you driving it and me driving it would be more than 50Kg in a less favourable position in the car..

I agree. Try driving the standard 140BHP 1.8 car on 185/70/14s before deciding. Again, speaking from experience, you can give it everything that engine has and the chassis remains absolutely planted. Boringly so, in fact. I reckon an MX5 in the 200-250 BHP region would be an absolute hoot and nowhere near uncontrollable.

I'd certainly sign up for a go in one ;)

Which reminds me.. one day I ought to ask you if I can try the MX5 on for size (if you turn up for a curry in it). Always wondered if I'd fit (I'm pretty sure I already know the answer when it comes to Westfields so no need to ask there! ;D)

The amount of times I've managed to get the Turbo Weasel tail to kick out (umm.. only about 40% of the time on purpose  ::)) with 140bhp (and no TC on the Diesels, of course), I really dare not drive that MX-5!!  :-X

question is: what do you understand from a high pressure turbo ?

1- 1.5 bar  is a usual pressure region not high.. but even if we assume you run that car (- 1.8 - )  at 1.5 bar it will be more than 300 bhp (remember thats a 1000 kg car) ..  I have driven  a turbod clit rs (2.0) at 1.3 bar and when you hammer it the car goes wherever it wants independant of steering ;D

sorry cant agree

I know someone who had 400rwhp (yes, hp at the wheels) in a Mk3 MR2 and kept that on the road quite happily (in Finland, although it wasn't his winter car - that was a Mk2 Supra turbo).. enough HP?

You can keep anything on the road and have fun in it if you're sensible and have a modicum of mechanical sympathy; yes, over a certain point all you've got is hp to light the tyres up, but 300hp in 1000Kg? Sure, I'd consider that "fun" territory, not "death" territory.  Remember, I've driven 250hp/tonne cars.. heck, it was my daily driver for about six years - summer, winter, snow, ice..

But there's a big difference between a 2.5bar turbo engine and the V6 these guys have dropped in.. so now I'm confused why that was even brought up?

now lets forget about 2.5 bar..    300 bhp in a 1000 kg car is more than controllable imo.. esp if its a fwd.. a rwd , may be  .. assuming manual transmissions..

I'm running at 0.8 bar currently and even in wet if I hammer the car starts to jump.. honestly ;D
