When Sky pulled their nice trick of transferring their transmissions onto a tighter beam a few months ago, the "best solution" for us expats was to get a Smart TV. Over here Samsung are rated .
So off we all went and bought Smart TVs which in fairness give you access to just about any TV content in the world though you might have to install a piece of trick software (DNS,VPN) so that the broadcaster e.g. BBC thinks you are in the UK or RTl in Germany and so on. That wouldn't apply or worry you for UK content in the UK.
However whilst it works you need to navigate through a few screens to get what you used to get by pressing say 503 for BBC News. Also crucially you need a stable and fast Internet service provider with unlimited monthly allowance. I don't think many Uk providers limit their monthly. An hour uses about 600Mb. If it isn't very fast or limited at peak times then you get buffeting(you will know it as buffering) which is incredibly irritating. Also some picture quality is poor compared to HD depending on what and where from you are watching.
I do actually think Smart TVs are pretty good, you won't look back - you will be too busy trying to work out how to access iPlayer, how to save the iplayer programme to a USb so someone else can watch it, you can't, and so on.
One final point. If you have Tv from a variety of sources already like Freeview and or Sky basic/full package you can connect all those up to your Smart TV. You just choose source from the menu and pop to (in our case) Spanish HD TV from an aerial, Sky SD from a dish, Main HD channels from another dish or channels via Internet, DVD player. You can even watch stuff on a USB stick.
You won't have time for any hobbies or forums.
PS What is a VHS recorder?
