Depends if you want to access services such as Netflix or other services streaming films over your broadband connection.
'Catch up' tv requires a internet connection....ie watch what you have missed on any channel for the last 7 days....may not be every channel....carnt remember....my tv is a 'smart tv' and carnt remember the last time I played with all the 'smart' options  ::)

Oh and summat to watch out for....my tv said it was wifi compatible ... which meant it didn't come with wifi enabled...and it needed me to buy the manu wifi dongle (which they had been a bit sneaky and only the manu's dongles would work) at a nice price of £70  >:(

So being the tight wad that I am....I refused to play nicely and seeing as the tv had a lan port....I bought a wifi bridge for about £15iirc .... connected that to the lan port on the tv and configured the bridge to connect to my wifi router......job jobbed  ;D

You can do that (better) with an ethernet cable.

Ok, lets try the easy way....

Do you watch tv?.....no....you don't need a tv
If you answered yes....have you heard of Netflix? Blockbuster? Amazon?
If yes, would you consider buying movies from them and have them streamed over the internet to your tv?
Yes? You need a smart tv.....
No? Have you considered watching programs that you have missed in the last 7 days? and forgot to record on your VHS recorder?
Yes? You need a smart tv
No? You don't need a new telly at all....that 605 lines B&W jobby will do just fine  :y ;D

Sorted now ?  :-\ :)

Cheapest option is a £10 Now TV Box off your WiFi, then for a few more quid, Roku or Chrome Cast.,

When Sky pulled their nice trick of transferring their transmissions onto a tighter beam a few months ago, the "best solution" for us expats was to get a Smart TV. Over here Samsung are rated .

So off we all went and bought Smart TVs which in fairness give you access to just about any TV content in the world though you might have to install a piece of trick software (DNS,VPN) so that the broadcaster e.g. BBC thinks you are in the UK or RTl in Germany and so on. That wouldn't apply or worry you for UK content in the UK.

However whilst it works you need to navigate through a few screens to get what you used to get by pressing  say 503 for BBC News. Also crucially you need a stable and fast Internet service provider with unlimited monthly allowance. I don't think many Uk providers limit their monthly. An hour uses about 600Mb. If it isn't very fast or limited at peak times then you get buffeting(you will know it as buffering) which is incredibly irritating. Also some picture quality is poor compared to HD depending on what and where from you are watching.

I do actually think Smart TVs are pretty good, you won't look back - you will be too busy trying to work out how to access iPlayer, how to save the iplayer programme to a USb so someone else can watch it, you can't, and so on.

One final point. If you have Tv from a variety of sources already like Freeview and or Sky basic/full package you can connect all those up to your Smart TV. You just choose source from the menu and pop to (in our case) Spanish HD TV from an aerial, Sky SD from a dish, Main HD channels from another dish or channels via Internet, DVD player. You can even watch stuff on a USB stick.

You won't have time for any hobbies or forums.

PS What is a VHS recorder????

Yes? You need a smart tv I probably don't need it then, even though I keep being told I am can have free Netflix
No? You don't need a new telly at all....that 605 lines B&W jobby will do just fine  :y ;D

Thanks V, we only watch a few programmes on TV, and have both Freeview and Freesat, no Sky. I don't watch footie, or reality TV prgrammes, only rugby, and golf I just wondered what it was all about, now I know and don't need it. :y :y :y

I am lucky if I watch an hour a day on average and that includes 30 mins of news while I consume my breakfast.

More to life than reality TV that is for sure.
