I feel your pain, and although the whole affair of getting something and finding it damaged is really annoying, I do confess I sometimes secretly hope things are 'not as advertised' as you can get a massive discount - like a snapper missing from a set, so it's half price, you then walk across the room, buy that missing spanner, and you're still up about 1/3rd of the original price - that kind of thing.
Bought a beautiful lava lamp a few years back, it arrived, wrong name on it, wrong colour lava. They sent a fresh bottle, in the right colour, no charge, and said 'of course you may keep the other bottle as an apology'

needless to say I was chuffed. Especially as I was going to buy the alternative-coloured bottle anyway when my bankbalance allowed it

Do it loads with good shoes/boots on heeebay - worn once, or small scuff from being stored, that sort of thing, get them at ridiculous cheap prices sometimes.
