Dont do a cheap kit from a supermarket, go to a homebrew shop near you (or order online if you dont have one)  Plus dont forget you will need the following equipment:

- homebrewing steriliser
- at least one fermenting bucket with airlock, A second bucket is helpful for racking (clearing)
- bottles and caps with capper
- priming sugar (depending on the beer type you can use honey)
- Syphon

There is a lot more you can do after that, it's all a question of how far you wish to go.  The equipment you need can be bought as a kit to reduce costs but once bought each batch costs about 30-50p a pint.  http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/ is a very good store and give good advice for free!  It helps they are local to me too :P

I have gone quite far in the setup with a 120L all-grain brewery (in the shed)  Currently the setup is manual but I am in the process of automating it with an arduino.  I have a fridge to keep my beer stable during the fermentation process (changes to the temp affect the beer a lot) and I have metal kegs for force carbonating and distributing (to me)

The deeper you get in to it the more you wish you paid attention in Chemistry class ::)

Meant to say, the Woodforde's beer kits are pretty good and easy to brew when starting out.

As said, get a fermentation bucket or two and also consider how you want to store the beer once it's ready.

You can bottle it, but will need a load of bottles and it's a real faff. If you can't be bothered with that, get a pressure barrel.

I would be very careful to sanitise all the kit, as, looking back, that's probably what went wrong with my first few kits. I'd actually recommend using something like Starsan, which doesn't impact the flavour of the beer, so no need to rise it. This means you can make sure everything is well coated until the point that you add the ingredients. If you use chlorine based sanitisers the beer will taste like TCP unless you rinse every trace of it away.

Also, don't give it excessive heat when fermenting. You don't need to put it in the airing cupboard! Room temperature in a centrally heated house is fine.

Also, when the instructions say fermentation will be done in a week, at least double that.

Craft beer - that's the overpriced stuff that hipsters drink? ::)

I would like to see the mess you need to clear up once it's done a brew. Can't see them automating the tidying up. Yeast + Hops + Wort = mess. Can't avoid that. ;D
