Car on two sets of ramps sounds unsafe.

Why?
If you're really paranoid you can use them facing in opposite directions.
With a big enough heave from the side the whole lot could topple over. Four axle stands are similarly dodgy.

Terry, if you can heave 1700kg of Omega off 4 ramps/stands you must be stronger than you look. Or, your stands and ramps need an upgrade.
I have recently bought bigger axle stands. What I seek is a pair of ramps that I can link together with a rod or bar, so that they cannot topple over, but I cannot find one. Ever seen one?

If the car is sitting on the ramps, a bar or rod linking the ramps won't have any effect as you have a 1700kg sitting on the ramps.

No, which ought to tell you something. I still can't see something as long and low as a pair of ramps being unstable. Especially with  a 1700kg car on them. One rod wouldn't really help much, I'd want to see one at each corner of the wheel pads which would remove the working space and access. Add in the extra time to assemble and disassemble everything and you've also eliminated the convenience and speed of use.

Perhaps you should checkout CJ Autos website, they sell a number of compact and affordable lifting apparatus that I have nowhere to keep or use.

Silly me, for some reason I presumed you would remove the front wheels. As DocG says, reverse car on to ramps, jack up the front as high as possible, lower on to axle stands, and then if worried place 2 spare wheels under the front wheels - safe as houses.
