Lets be honest.

If they are Wharfdale, they need to be older than 20yrs to be anything other than shite...   ...and if they are, the speakers are in desperate need of replacement.

Looking at those eBay photos, you SHOULD be able to remove the front fabric because the drive units are clearly screwed onto the front panel from the front, and how else would you be able to do that if you cannot expose the front panel?
The cabinets appear to be ported, but if you do disassemble them, you still need to seal them properly when reassembling them.

That age speaker will have some sort of tacky gum holding the grill in place, also looking at the ebay pics, it looks as if you can unscrew the rear of the cabinet

try and warm the posts to see if you can loosen the glue with a hair drier, I had a very old set if missions that had this and it wasn't very pretty with the grill removed.

It may not be the coils that are damaged, the surrounds could have rotted causing an imbalance then all you need is new rings, I did a pair of big old jamo's a few years ago and they are still going stong

Thia is where I show MY age! Your mention of the age of speakers made me think - my Tannoy Yorks are 44 years old and still sounding wonderful. The bass reproduction is so smooth and understated with not a hint of "one-note-ness".  Mind you, it ought to be, as they are the size of a 4 drawer filing cabinet!
I fell in love with them when I heard them demonstrated at the Hi-Fi and Audio show that used to be held annually at the Russell Hotel, London. Anyone else remember that event?

As you get older, an ancient set of speakers compliments that process. As the speakers deteriorate, so does your hearing, so they sound as good as ever.  ;D

Ive always rated Missions myself.

Some of the Classics, - Mission, Kef. B&W, Q Acoustics, Quad, Wharfedale, Monitor Audio, Tannoy, to name a few.

For HiFi, stay away from Bose and anything made in the Far East.

Yes i was looking at Mission  :y I will cross off Bose then as i was just looking at those .

I have a pair of Mission 733i floor standers and think they`re great, really good neutral sound to them, perfect partner to my Cyrus Straightline amp 8)

I've got a gorgeous pair of Mission 734's sat at the back of the living room which need 1 (or knowing I should change in pairs, 2) main drivers  ;)
Gav if you feel the need for a change, give us first dabs on them please mate  :)
I'd love to get them running with my Cyrus 2 again  :)

I've been running a pair of Mission M74's for a few years now.
There nice but never a patch on the 734's  :'(

Steve (EMD)
I've been running Mission speakers since 1984 when I bought a pair of 1st gen Mission 70's.
As Gav says, match them with the right amp and source and you will be pushed to get a more clean and detailed sound at any price imo  :y

My music setup is currently a Mission pcm 700 CD player / Pioneer mini disc player for source.
Cyrus 2 amp and M74 speakers.

AV is Yamaha DSP amp
Mission 760's for front left and right.
Mission 75 C centre speaker and my first purchased 70's at the rear.

As you can probably see, I love Mission / Cyrus stuff  ;D
