A couple of members have mentioned Jags, well going by our experience on Friday there are some potential bargains out there. We sent a 51 plate, Xtype, 2.5 V6 manual, with cloth trim ( the poverty model ) nice graphite metallic colour to auction, 74k Jag history to 60k, very tidy, presentable car, slight noise on the diff but at auction that wouldn't be noticeable. Any guesses on what it did? And yes I know its a Mondeo in disguise. £2050, take the auction fees off and we will return £1970 for it.
That's cheap but i prefer the XJ's. However i'd rather have the X type than a Ghia x Mondeo. Not a real Jag but better than a Mondy! 8-)
The X type was a decent car, we just don't have the facilities / time / money to be fixing Jag diffs. Apparently its a common problem, you can't use the diff from a Mondeo though!!! I was quite impressed with it and the engine was the chain driven variety so no expensive belt jobs just after you've bought it, nice smooth quiet drive. For all its based on a Mondeo the parts prices bear no resembelance.

for me it will be espace diesel (if fuel price continues going up) or subaru legacy (outback) estate.
Tony at Wim said he never sees them, bad for business, good for us, no bloody wishbone/geometry issues. Friend of myn looked into it but found the interior very plain. Couple of years ago now tho, decided to stick with lexus is300 for a while, estate boot was bigger or something.
Ps they see plenty of lexi ironically.

This is the eternal question......

Jags are too bland, and the association with ford at any level puits me off,  having borrowed an S type the seats killed my back after 20 miles

Bmw build quality is not what it used to be, fAther in law is a bmw mechanic and he tells me some  horror stories

Rover 75 V8

They're rare - but the prices will plummet because a) its a Rover and b) its a tasty and thirsty V8

rear wheel drive, all the toys  :y :y

Mate of mine had one of those actually. The MG badged version of it. Can't remember what it's called. He kept talking about his V8 MG and I had a picture of an MGB V8 / MGR V8 until he turned up in it.  ;D

In fairness, it sounded awesome, went like the clappers, had a nice manual box, RWD, etc. I just don't like the "retro" styling of the Rover 75. It's a bit "Hyacinth Bucket" for me.

I'd be inclined to go and buy a Mustang instead and get the same engine in a pretty body. :-* Rover hadn't even bothered to hide the Ford logos which were all over the place under the bonnet.

I would imagine they've depreciated spectacularly. Everything is against them, so maybe a good 2nd hand buy.

Having been able to move to a new car for the first time, the only one to give me that good feeling as the Omega does, is the new Jaguar XF. I tried the 2.7 diesel and it impressed me that much it I couldn't resist it, a truly awesome car, and well worth considering a few years down the line.

very happy with my 3.2 its on a 52 plate and an 03 car TB tells me going by the vin plate. So its about as late as likely to get. I intend to keep it at least 5 years minimum. During my search for the ideal omega it was clear they becoming harder to find. So i got thinking what the hell am a going to replace this one with when it finally claps out?
Presuming, as seems likely, that omegas will be all dead and scrapped by then, what is depreciating quick enough in the exec. car market that will have all the latest toys and comfort for under 5k with
50 to 70000 miles that i can buy as cheaply as poss.

In other words what else are we going to buy when there are no more omegas left?

After reading all the replies you have had Chris, all the alternatives, I don't know about you but I have got a headache! :D :D :D :D  Like the one when you are looking for your new home! :o :o

Personally why not just keep the miggy running until you give up driving; which we may all have to do in 50 years time (if not before!) and donate it to a museum! ;) :y  It will be far easier! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I wish I had done that with my A40, Escort Mk1's, Cortina's Mk's 3,4 & 5, Carlton's, and (especially!!!!) Senator..........ahhhhhhhhhh!!!  If only!!!!! :D :D :D ;D ;)

i saw an Audi S8 in the carpark today, verrry nice. So got looking on AT:

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/AUDI+A8/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-11-42-240-4294966565-4294966997/advert.action?R=200832316150945&distance=17&postcode=NN13+6ER&channel=CARS&make=AUDI&model=A8&min_pr=3000&max_pr=&max_mileage=80000

Think in a couple of years that will be my replacement, Audis tend to hold their value well.
Must admit Audi are turning out some desirable motors. Do'nt seem to depreciate as quickly as other prestige marques either. I've always liked thier understatement, ie. I've made it, in life but i do'nt feel the need to shout about it.
   Subtlety can speak volumes! :)

just about to add a post to this and on comes a moody car ad.
" presence is a curious thing" ooh...im thinking.
" if you need to prove youve got it, you probably never had it in the first place" im thinking i bet this is an Audi ad."not ostentatious..." ... no, it was a Mercedes ad.
Attention grabbing? yes! Accurate? yes,Relate to it? Yes. Does it fit Mercedes? No Chance, not in my book anyway. Audi on the other hand...

The point, for me at least, is having your car cake and eating it... twice over. It has to have everything, it has to tick all the boxs, it has to be cheap, sorry, inexpensive, and look expensive but do it with out looking ott so some pikey will key it and ill panic about parking it anywhere.( i will panic koz its my car, but you know what i mean) in a word "presence".
Does the omega fit the above? Well for the money i had, its not to far off, or as close as i could get anyway.
If i had the cash would i buy, let me see, a new m5? Nope. A new anything? Nope. After a year or 2 youve chucked at least 10k down the drain. But you know all that... sadley, it seems to me at least, only the German cars really seem to manage it!
