Getting a bit desperate now
« on: 24 February 2025, 16:36:42 »

Picked my son up from the train station to take him for a dental appointment. On the way there is a steepish hill from a roundabout, the speed limit goes from 30 to 60 and everyone accelerates up the hill in a show of relief. I noticed the engine was revving higher than usual and didn't seem to want to change up. I pushed it into manual and the arrow on the dash was telling me to change up from 4th to 5th, but it wouldn't. Just revving away in 4th. Once we got back on the flat, it seemed to behave normally, it just felt like it was slipping going uphill.
I'm not prepared to spend money on a gearbox service, so do I footle around until I'm ready to buy something different or do I bite the bullet?

There is nothing decent, diesel and auto, around for around £10K, which is all I want to spend  :(

So, to summarise, that's the front doors gone slightly pink, the infotainment screen gone blank, the timing chain noisy on startup, a damaged rear bumper and a slipping gearbox.
A Saturdays work for a keen enthusiast  ::)

No, I don't go anywhere near congestion zones.

This sounds similar to the problem I had with the mighty Signum....except she would often get stuck in 2nd gear.

I neglected to tell the nice people at WBAC that it happened again on the way to them. I feel really bad about that. ::)

Has it had the gearbox oil and filter changed at the service intervals or less?

It's been serviced in the old fashioned way. Engine oil and filter once every twelve months whether it needed it or not.

I have no doubt the engine would be good for another 50,000 miles, it's just the bits attached to it that are facked

Why not another astra/insignia, being as you seemed to get on fine with what you have, before it went sad that is.

Something like this - I like the colour....

Reap what I sow? It's a nine year old astra that has never let me down. I paid £10K for it in 2018 on 9000 miles and its now done 84,000 miles. I think I've done rather well out of it.

In that case £10k budget should buy you a pretty decent car if you avoid the whole new cars are better corporate marketing wank.
