I know when my cars are doing a regen, Mark. My astra J used to idle at around 900rpm instead of 750 and the engine tone changed. On this one, astra K, it sounds as if there's a hole in the exhaust at low revs and, again, the engine tone changes.

I've had my ML for 40-odd thousand miles & nearly 6 years and have yet to notice it doing a regen .... not saying it's never done so, but I've yet to notice!

I would question the sense in buying a dpf/adblue equipped diesel unless you need it for ULEZ purposes.

Especially when you can buy a nice Astra estate for peanuts.

Regardless of what anyone else thinks about value for money, it fits the brief, is in budget and is clearly the kind of thing Ste likes as he's had similar before.

Also, I think a lot of people need to take another look at how much cars actually cost these days. I did a search for 7yr old estate cars, up to 50k miles, 1.8l minimum, auto, (cleared out the dacias and skoda fabias that really arent estate cars), not written off. The cheapest thing that came back were passats and leons at £12-13k. Like everything else, cars just cost a shed load more than they did a few years ago. When an astra estate with a poxy 1.2l engine is £25k+ new, they're bound to cost a fair bit second hand.

Its totally mad, but its the reality we now live in.

Yep. I paid £10.5K for this astra when it was 18 months old with 9K miles. That was in 2018, before the world went mad.

It will be a cold day in hell before I pay £9000 for a decade old Insignia.

Have you considered a derv BMW. I've seen a few priced from around £10,000 for a 2018 car.
