Russia is basically bankrupt. They need to be a part of the global picture. That's their incentive and Putin isn't getting any younger and what better legacy than ensuring the future of his country? Certainly not squabbling over who's entitled to part of something that someone 1500 years ago said their cousin could have.

As to the mineral deal, that's a means to recoup some of the trillion dollar black hole in the US budget. Obviously the investment on infrastructure afterwards will need protecting and that's the link to ending the war and maintaining some sort of civility.

No it's not. Russia is happily selling oil and gas to China, India and..... Europe!  European countries spent more on Russian oil and gas last year than they did on aid to Ukraine!   :-X

Anyway, peace will just as likely bankrupt Russia, as a large proportion of it's industry has been turned over to the war effort, which has been sustaining their economy.  ::)

That said, the Russian economy is obviously not booming with high inflation and punishing interest rates, but I saw plenty of Russian families on holiday in Vietnam and Thailand when I was there a few weeks ago, so things can't be that bad.  There were also lots of young and youngish Russian men there.... for obvious reasons.  :-X

Well relations with Russia might have normalised in 10 years time and you might be able to get your money back. The good news is that if the interest rate stays at around 20% your £10,000 will have grown to about £63,000.  :y

Of course, if Lord Opti is correct it will be Mrs STEMO getting a nice windfall.  :)

Ok....update. Sanctions on Canada and Mexico and probably everyone else have been postponed. Trump woke up this morning and decided to sanction Russia.
One problem, they're already sanctioned.  ;D

I'm finding it impossible to understand the motifs behind his decisions and directives other than the obvious .
As has been pointed out every announcement , action and speech has been to the whole and sole benefit of russia the country who only weeks ago threatend to lauch a hypersonic nuclear missle at America.
I'm stunned at the openly hostile approach to Ukraine and the willingness to allow civilian and military deaths to increase by the withdrawl of all the assistence that they had up to recently given.
It wildly reported that trump holds a grudge like no other person known and I keep coming back to the inciident where Ukraine refused to covertly investigate Biden at trumps behest .
If this has any bearing on his vile and repugnant approach to the way he is seeking to " stop all the killing of young men" then he is a warped and seriously demented individual.
I am deeply saddend that America , the country that I have warmed to all my life , has almost overnight turned into the antithesis of all that I hold high.
I was at best ambivalent towards him '17 -'21 but find him truly loathsome now .
I wonder how the American miltary machine feels at suddenly being ordered to stop assisting the foe of russia and turn to assisting their own foe of 75 years .
