Here We Go Again - Computer Related
« on: 23 September 2008, 13:52:26 »

Treat myself to a 1TB F1 Samsung Spinpoint hard drive plus  a few other goodies.

Checked the delivery, all correct, and rather than putting it on the shelf like I normally do I took it out and connected it to my system to prepare/format and the machine doesnt even see it.

Quick question before I continue.

Are there any limits on hard drive sizes on newish motherboards or even in XP Pro itself, asking now incase it's just a loose cable and before I start preparing it.

TIA  :y :y

Disk is good choice

but first time you need to check from bios .What capacity is it..

Also XP have limitations..But you can partition..
try auto setting and be sure you connect to the correct port..

and dont forget to close the pc before you make any operation..

totally plug off and push the on button to empty the condansators..

if this doesnt solve you need to upgrade mobo bios..

which is a bit risky..You must be sure you dont loose power during upgrade..

another way is add on cards which bypasses local controller..

Changed the Sata cable, all sorted.

Had the chance to add the drive as a whole disk, partitioning into 100/400/400/remaining as we speak. :P

seems that there will be a raid configuration on the road..

2 things you need to check

a healthy strong power supply (very strongly recommended )

and you will have the limit 2 TB per partition ..

Not bothered about RAID, PSU will be a minimum of a Thermaltake 720 Watt.  Need to optimise case with monitored cooling, maybe from a control panel to set the temps or even the spare motherboard fan controllers if they are teperature controllable.

even if you stock some dvd films and music files you can benefit from RAID.. For example RAID 5 with 4 disks will have a good  performance (can be done with minimum 3 disks with parity)..Also will be safe..(Waiting for TheBoy comments ;D)

Am staying out of the Raid conversations, my systems are used for basic storage and not performance overall on this basis.

Of the other computers I have I was considering a bootup raid system purely to speed things up, but as yet have never experimented with it.

Any performance I build into a computer will be for gaming and for that reason all my hard drive storage will be built into annother base/bases.

Hopeing to gain the performance I need and require without overclocking

if you install the games on raid partitions (depending on the game not tetris ;D) even they will be a bit faster..

if you find time and a small budget for that experimenting RAID its a joy..

But not with 1TB * 5 disks ..Will be pretty useless unless you are RAF..

like 4* 120 GB..(I hear some people say thats overkill ;D)

Threw one of those drives in the MCE a few weeks ago.

Now I know Samsung are currently in the 'self-abusers Outfit' category with me at the moment, but I have to concede its a very good consumer drive :y

Bloody Hell what you planning on running? NASA!!:D Unless your running New games or similar you dont need such fancy cooling just get a case with big fans front & TOP (there the main ones) top to suck warm air out back ones are ok too  but side fans are useless in my experience just added noise, Decent cases have settings for low/med/high  speed for fan thats all you need plus you can regulate fan speeds in your case on say cpu & graphics card with Riva Tuner programme or similar .... :y

Actually been looking at the Thermaltake Armor.  Can decide what to go for as yet.
