Just to kick off on a tangent, sorry for breaking the thread, BUT, this general bad market has got me very concerned, gas/leccy prices  especially, even though I'm capped, I'm in the process of installing a multi fuel stove, coal £16 / bag, I can get all the wood I need at the moment that is!

Speaking to the chimney sweep only yesterday, he says that there are an increasing number of homes going to solid fuel, he hasn't been so busy since the eighties, until Maggie shagg3d the pits.

It's hitting us all, with 2 years to pay on the mortgage, I'm in two minds whether to pay it off now with savings (Rainy day money) or what!  I feel like I'm a squirrel rummaging around hoarding nuts for a long cold winter.

I really feel for some families who are not as fortunate as mine, young couples with new mortgages who jumped on the band waggon assuming that the price of houses were rising higher and higher, then, freeze n' fall, negative equity etc...

DC :'(

It may be a psychological blow, but younger people that recently bought can walk away from negative equity.  It's happening a lot already.  The people that will really feel the pain are those close to retirement, and doubly so for those made redundant late in their careers.

If you have a small mortgage, I would not pay it off.  You won't get another one soon if you need the cash.

Trains may have been invented here, but public transport is a foreign concept!

Hi Theo,
Agreed, we don't plan any more mortgaging, it would be nice to say bye bye to the monthly expense, but, if I was out of work for example, I'd just like that money to fall back on.  What bothers me, is that I'm paying interest to the bank each month for the privilage!

Put it somewhere that gets a bit of interest, and the difference shouldn't be too bad.
