Question.

Hard ware or software?

If hard ware - Maybe controller ?

I belive the IDE and Sata are different chips, but are all the Sata drives run throught the same Sata Controller chips?

TIA. :y :y

This is a complete punt but I would say the Southbridge on the chip. Or the IDE controller fubarred, and is knacking the Southbridge.

Either that or BIOS.

Thought that the 1st time round doing IDE to Sata.  But this time is Sata to Sata

Southbridge feels quite hot but never checked it before so cant compare a Now/Then temp.

The boards being replaced but I just wanted to get to the bottom of it.

Anyone know of any Northbridge and Southbridge test/analyisis software. ??

TIA.   :y :y

Hence my comment that a faulty IDE controller is dragging the Southbridge down with it and causing general disc I/O pain.

IIRC, you might have cooked the CPU? Perhaps that's the problem? Data goes through address busses and data busses before it reaches the southbridge. With 3 discs you will have increased the range of addresses in use, wether you use them or not. ...Thinking out loud really.

I don't know of any test software that works at such a low level. I would do the same as you have planned and swap bits out.

Good luck.  :y

North & South bridge can get hot some do need fans on or a fan blowing on them  (whats the mobo type)
Just connect the sata drive up with windows on it run it then one by one attach the ide drives obviously using one as master/slave dont use cable select it dont always work !! run the system after each one is added to see if it reads info/data  then you will find out if one hdd is a problem or if the data as been corrupted  GL  Phil :y

Hi Willy

Tried all combinations over the last few days, I got the data off the IDE, I actually thought that drive was the problem and it had corrupted the data

Boards served it ime now, had 2 years plus of heavy usage out of it which surprises me as my systems normally get replaced with in a year.

This has ended up being one of things that I wanted to get to the bottom of, which is why I was after some diagnostics software to see if it showed any failues.
