Sick of looking at it!
« on: 07 January 2009, 22:32:28 »

My 03 2.2 DTi vectra has been sat on my drive since july last year and i'm sick of looking at it! It won't start at all and i took it to the vauxhall dealers (dews of halifax) who said it was the fuel pump which is a sealed unit with the ecu that has failed.

Just wondering if anybody knows how i can fix it on the cheap at all! Vx have quoted nearly £2500 to do the job.

Any ideas would be massively appreciated.

It was running completely fine then one day just decided it wouldn't start anymore and the eml came on!

Modified: forgot to put that it is a vectra!

To fit a new fuel pump, that would nearly buy your Miggy wouldnt it.

I would get 3 prices, seems ecessive, if it is then I would report them to trading standards.

Diesel pumps are expensive. One for my old Rover 25 is nearly £1000 :o

Diesel pumps are friggin expensive.  That sounds high, not sure what the labour charge is to change a pump

Thank god for my miggy!

Thing is are you sure its the pump ?. A certain garage diagnosed a problem with my facelift as the main ECU for only £650, where it looks as if it was just the imobiliser reader at £65.

Some possibilities for a start,  http://www.pbasher.com/look-up/index.php?carMakeID=1 and I hate to mention the competition but http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/showthread.php?t=103301 and even possibly http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=13111 . Here's one for a very reasonable fee, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110320842830&cguid=60e4c47d11e0a0e203e3b4a3fd681ffd

however I understand there are many different models, and they have to be coded to the ECU, so check this before spending any cash.

It was running completely fine then one day just decided it wouldn't start anymore and the eml came on!

Modified: forgot to put that it is a vectra!

I bought a W reg 2.0 DTi Vectra as a non runner thinking 'I will fix it'

Went to VX and asked for a new pump, and they said they wanted more than £1900 ex vat JUST for the pump, and they also said the warranty would be invalid unless they fitted it... I told them where to go!  :o  :(

Me been me... Went on ebay, spend about 100 quid on a diesel pump, spent half a day fitting it to be back to square one again... :-/

I didn’t learn, and bought another pump off ebay for another 100 quid (bloke said if it doesn’t work, I can have my money back). Anyway, fitted this pump... 3 flat batteries later, and 2 empty cans of easy start (runs fantastic on that stuff btw!) I gave up :-[... Couldn’t be bothered removing the duff pump to send back to ebay, as it would take ANOTHER afternoon changing the pump to put a dead one back on (otherwise I couldn’t crank the engine over without bending valves - and that was the only way I could move the car - till the battery died!!) Sold the car to a member on VVOC, who ended up putting another engine in it (which I have since seen up and running at PVS last year  ;D)

Since then, I decided im NEVER buying a car that has that model fuel pump fitted to it  >:( >:( >:(

may be worht a try?
under at the back of the pump is a set of wires, had a desiel vectranin with a strange problem sometimes it would run, other times it wouldnt, found out by remnoving the connector plug and reconnecting it it would run for a few mons, took the plunge and stripped the wire covering off and found a broken wire about 3 inches away from the pump where the bend was, it was replaced with a new pice spliced in and the car has given no probs since, have seen a couple more with a similar fault since, however have also seen around 5 or 6 with knackered pumps, seems to be lack of lubrication in the fuel that causes it, good tip if you own one is to pour a pint of good quality engine oil in the tank for every 25 litres of fuel, obviously it would be best mixed outside the tank tho!!!   :y

So what happens if you stop paying the finance?  they repo the car but fixing it is their problem.  In some odd way that may be a better option for you than spending £2.5k.  not sure what it does to your credit history
