I do not have a problem with this if it means more people being prosecuted for using their mobiles when driving or not concentrating for some other reason. I would even like drivers prosecuted for smoking behind the wheel because in order to light the cigarette they must have taken their eyes off the road & as for holding it while driving - that's no different from holding a phone.
Discuss!

agree and disagree - had many a near miss from dropping a ciggy in the car which is vey bad but i think it is a complete civil libity issue if you try and tell me i can't smoke in my own car!

ps i've given up now but eat an apple on the way home instead, is that dangerous?

Driving an auto i only need one hand to drive so completely in control?

Oh agree....wife likes the fact i have a free hand now esp on kick down. :y ;D

It killed my father

It helped kill both my Grandads ....... we'll see if we can get smoking banned completely. It'll never happen!
I thought we were talking about smoking at the wheel.  :-? As you've never smoked how can you state that it's dangerous at the wheel? It takes no longer to glance at the fag lighter than it does your speedo, or do your eyes never leave the view of the front screen?   :-/
I was talking about smoking at the wheel & yes, I would like to see smoking banned completely (along with Country & Western music)

We are surely sleepwalking towards an 'Orwellian' nightmare of State and Police surveillance: wake up people!.......see what this anti civil-libertarian 'creep' is costing ALL of us.

 ::) Rant over; but I don`t feel the slightest-bit better! :'(

There is a few of these in London run by local councils to catch motorists who park badly. In a 3 year trial by one local authority they raised millions, even seen them parked up on zig zags on crossings & when questioned they claim they are exempt from parking laws. Ironic really that they park up braking the law to catch motorists parked up breaking the law   ::)

I bet no one can say they pull over to knock the heated rear window on? or to turn the demister up/down - actually no i bet someone will :D ;D but i bet no-one can say it with total honesty  :)

I am in full support of anything that keeps the damned idiots who still use mobile phones whilst driving off the road, or are busy doing anything and everything but be in control of their car.

However, I am not in favour of 'lazy' policing, where instead of traffic officers dealing live with offences and using human instinct, we have cameras operating in the hope of catching somebody out.  These will miss drink or drug driving offenders, motorist without licenses, insurance, valid tax, and many other crimes that only a live officer will detect by physically stopping the motorist. ::) ::) ::)

we need far more traffic officers out there (some nights in Kent they are down to two patrols!**) instead of cash producing devices like cameras that 'print' easy money but fail to really protect the public. >:(

** and when operation 'stack' is in place forget about even those being effective!! >:(

As long as the law is applied sensibily and fairly I have no problem with it. We should make a start by asking a senior prosecutor to watch certain episodes of Traffic Cops and Police Interceptors and to charge the various officers ( who should know better ) with offences such as using a shoulder mounted push to talk radio, pulling away while still putting on a seat belt, driving without a seat belt, adjusting forward mounted cameras while driving, etc etc. Yet again the motorist receives disproportionate attention while potential terrorists in Manchester who don't have the correct papers are allowed into the UK and told to report back!!!!!!! Perhaps the resources of the police should be directed towards serious crimes rather than trivial mis demeanours, then again there's no money in chasing real criminals.

The main problem in the application of law by civil police forces at the moment, is the sinister amount of political influence on the command structure of such forces.

Policing is carried out to a budget, by commanders who are more likely to pay attention to budget constraints, than the need to combat ordinary everyday crime.  That, together with health and safety concerns, crime statistics and target rates and political sensitivity, means that most people are not getting the level of service they need and deserve.

This will not change.  Forget about PC Dixon - look out for the paramilitary officer of the near future.  The application of law will be done remotely via technology or by proxy through sparsely trained community officers and, when necessary, highly trained well armed officers will be deployed to keep the great unwashed in check.

Debs, we are not heading towards a police state - we are there.

I have been of the beast, and that which I have seen, troubles me greatly.

I now need two fingers of Makers Mark over ice to calm down!

In pursuance of their duties these laws do not apply to a police vehicle if that action is justified.  i.e. exceeding the speed limit if a 'standard' or above trained police driver is involved when answering a 999 call or pursuing law breakers, or parking on double yellows / on the pavement when executing their duty like dealing with an incident or monitoring traffic. :y :y
