Downside is im sure it would drain your battery very quickly if the engine wasnt on, which it doesnt tend to be when you are working on the car.

Had one since they were on offer last year, it doubles as a tent light when were at a meet.

If using one of these away from mains power it'd be better to get a 12v powered light in the first place. Plenty available from camping places, etc.

These are very efficient because, although they effectively contain their own inverter, it is only sized to provide the couple of watts the light needs so is much more efficient than a mains inverter designed for a couple of hundred watts, useful though they are.

Are you saying then that for someone in my situation it is best to have a small generator Jimbob? :-? :-?

depends on what you want.

The light I have for car work is like that one, but has 30 odd led's instead of a tube, and has a rechargable battery in it.

Also works off mains, or fag lighter.

Most camping shops sell em.

Trouble is LED's do not make good work lights.....the Aldi one is a CF type so much better for working with.

The inverter wont nobble a battery very quicky, the light is 20W max and even with efficiency taken into account, thats no more than 2 amp drawn which given the Omega battery is 50AH+....gives 25 hours use (assuming its ok and fully charged)

Indeed; but why?.......is it because the light is polarised?.......or too narrow a band?
My LED flashlights are rubbish; even just for peering down into an oil tank to check the level.....the old fashioned tungsten filament 'beam' flashlights seem much better for task lighting.  :-/

Its simple, the LED is not a white light source, it is actualy a narrow red, Green and Blue light source.

This makes it appear white (ala white on a TV/Monitor screen) and for this they are very good.

The problem is that the light spectrum for each colour is very narrow (being related to the Energy gap of the semiconductor compound from which it is produced) and so when the light reflects off a surface,  you get a lot of detail lost as all surfaces reflect different wavelengths of light in differing amounts.

The result is lost detail and tiring light to work under.

One of the LED solutions being considered to improve the spectrum of light output from LED's is to use a UV LED with a phosphor coat ala a CF bulb!
