What can the police do...
« on: 03 February 2007, 22:26:52 »

... About nasty/threatening letters?

Just had a call from a very upset girlfriend, who has recieved one, typically just after I've left to go to work  [smiley=angry.gif]

Contents were mostly more offensive than threatening, such as "why are you so fat", "you look like a bloke"... etc. There is also some complete hogwash in there about being a bad mother and not feeding her daughter, which I can confirm is absolutely ridiculous.

Denying a kid junk food in an attempt to make them eat proper meals is hardly wrong.

I personally believe, that this letter originates from an incident that occured last week, when someone she enrusted to babysit, effectively robbed her, albeit petty things, such as DVDs, full bottles of spirits, a small (ish) amount of money which was hidden in her bedroom!

We spoke to the people that were trusted with the house, who pretty much re-imbursed us for what was taken, so did not see any need to involve police at that time.

However after recieving this letter, something is obviously still not right. She has no significant enemies that she's aware of, and very few people she associates with, not having been in the area for very long.

When she got this letter, I told her to call the police helpdesk. She was basically told that it wasn't a police matter and not important? Is this so?

I understand it doesn't need an immediate police presence, but can they really just dismiss it full stop?

I called them and got the same answer, which I wouldn't stand for and insisted on speaking to someone more senior. I was eventually told to take her to the station after the weekend.

Which I will certainly do.

I'm fuming  >:(

If you feel cr@p b/c that's what you are, the only way to feel better is to make others miserable.

Don't know about over here, but probably not much the police can do.  Making a big stink about it could cause you a lot of problems with this person down the road.

Upsetting my other half like this is going to cause him some pretty concerning problems with me at this rate.

When it comes to those close to me, I'm a headcase  :-/

Sorry to hear about this James.

Not sure what the police can do, I guess they could match handwriting against a suspect? If its been printed, they could prob tell which type of printer.

But that's all a bit OTT really, i suspect as you do its from a disgruntled employee from a baby sitting agency? You told them about the incident, they knew who it was because they know who they sent for that job.

The agency probably sacked such person... and now they are pi$$ed!!

If you wanted to you could get them, if you get any more it might be worth sending a letter to this ex baby sitter saying we know its you we can match hand writing ect...

I suspect this is a one off letter though, but still not nice for the Mrs  :(

It wasn't an agency mate, it was a lady down the road that babysat as a favour, and it was her scumbag son that's caused all these problems.

Any more occurances of such things, and if the police aren't helpful, I'll have to think of a way to enforce the law myself ;)

Does'nt sound good, as the rest have said unless there is potentially or was a threat of murder/killing then don't think the police will do much, personally I think you are better off just leaving it regarding the police. I would copy the letter and send the original back to the address where you assume it originated, post it from outside of your town if possible, and wear gloves. See what happens then, seems all a bit too obvious that it would happen so soon after the babysitting incident.

I had a similar problems a couple of years ago with a member of staff, he had e-mailed my manager and his line manager, The latter who I also managed. The e-mail was from thesheepshagger@hotmail.com., it was not copied to me, but the content was clearly dircetd at me and my wife, and due to some of the inferences in the e-mail could have only came from one person. Whom I had given several opportunities to sort himself out regarding his work. I was fuming, could'nt wait for the little american p**ck to come into work. I had him straight in the office told him to finish up that day as he was fired, then I presented the e-mail to him and aksed do you know anything about this, his head went down and his face went red. I said to him if I ever find out who done that e-mail i will chop his f****n b**ls off and stick them so far up their f****n arse they wont be able to sh*t for 3 months. He left the office promptly cleared his desk and left. Had no doubt that it was him, have never seen him since and he lives not far from me, but if I do ever see him he will get a wee glasgow kiss and a couple of slaps. :y :y

Just keep a record of everything that happens and if it becomes a regular occurrence then you may have a case for harrassment and some sort of restraining order.

Were there any threats in the letter James, or any inferred threats, or anything which could be perceived as a threat by a reasonable person?

Ask the local police station to record the incident and name names...ask to list a harrassment complaint. The local police should then knock on his door and tell him that one more act of harrassment and they get knicked.

Also report the theft.....you could persue burglary charges against them
