Take the grand -- but in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM say or do anything to make her think it's in full and final settlement !!!

Without wanting to appear alarmist -- that sounds like it was quite a shunt ---- keep an eye on the kids and Ann for a couple of days -- wattch for headaches, neck or back aches -- in yourself too -- whiplash can take a couple of days to come out.

Keep your options open

I agree there.....and remember that if you do suffer whiplash etc if you go through insurance....you'll get 2-2.5k per claimant  ;)

My advice would be to get yourself/ann and the kids to the docs in the morning or as soon as poss for a check up  :y

Well, if she's definately insured, go through her insurance, because a grand wont touch this claim.

I agree 100%, a grand wouldn't even begin to stir my interest if I had been hit so hard it twisted the floor of the motor.

I know there are people out there that sometimes want to settle in cash rather than go through insurance, but they don't start talking figures until they know what they are up against for sure (it's normally "get a quote and let me know" kind of thing).

The other curious thing is that she offered to settle privately, yet she informed her insurance anyway.
People ONLY offer to settle privately when they DON'T want their insurance to know they've had an accident (or they aren't insured and are scared of getting nicked), so that just doesn't ring right.

PS

Nick, how did you check out that she was insured?
If you did it through askmid, all that proves is that the car is insured.....it doesn't mean she is the policy holder or even a named driver.

They would say that Nick, and they will be breathing a huge sigh of relief if you accept IMO.

You're not getting it Nick. If you or Ann or both wake up tomorrow with possible neck injuries or whatever, then the insurance claim will rocket. Believe me mate, the car repairs are a very small part of most insurance claims.

If you absolve her of responsibility by taking her cash, you may regret it.

Nick...

I was involved in an accident in 2001 where someone drove in to the side of my car while I was waiting at a set of traffic lights.

The car was an F reg Nissan Bluebird 2.0 GSXi, and was worth no more than £600 in the real world. The damage itself was quite minimal (wing, headlight, indicator, bumper, and grill) and we both drove away from the accident.

The final bill for that accident came out to £4,800, and neither myself nor the other driver had any injuries.

If you want to take a grand then take it, but you'll be a fool if you do IMO.
