There are an awful lot of 'IT experts', both professional and amateur/hobbist, who don't know their 'Rs from their elbows

Yup...and they all came to the surface when MS invented "plug & pray".
If we went back to pre "plug & play" days, you'd wipe out a good 80% of the so called experts in 5 seconds flat.

Fortunately, a pre "plug & play" test isn't necessary....because you can easily suss the bullshitters within 30 seconds of talking to them.

Plug and play, despite being, err, "1st attempt" in Win9x, was essential for the PC industry.  For example, my Mum, bless here, can now buy bits for her PC and install them without having to take the whole thing to her local shop.

I remember drivers disks and stuff - XP made this easier, but I have used some quite esoteric OSes

However it has also spawned a breed of individual that thinks they know it all...when in reality they know f**k all.

On the plus side though, when the wannabe has finished trashing the system....the punter can pay double what it would have cost because you now have 2 lots of problems to resolve.

I lot of ones I regularly see, no messing when they break it, I have sysprep'd and imaged before going back to them .

My brother's stuff, due to number of PCs in his office, its a unattend.txt rebuild, and all apps redeployed by GPO. As the PCs store no data, he can go from fubar to working in about 30mins, all without my intervention.

I prefer Ghost myself - 7GB restored in under 10 minutes with ease.

After that, Kix takes over to alter the SID and install any programs that may be missing from the restore image.
Like your own setup, completely unattended.

I do use ghost for some, just not my brother's stuff as each one runs different apps, so only need basebuild (with drivers), GPO does rest.  Also, makes it a piece of cake to slpstream service pack without having to recreate ghosts.

Can't get your speed for build from DVD though, guess you're doing it from disk/network?

yes im sure you all know modern pc's now use Inbuilt partition based restore images anyway this local idiot who advertises in the local rag deleted the partition off my dads friends new Acer laptop....

he reinstalled XP as he told him "vista is rubbish blah blah" and XP is the way to go anyway the tit delelted the master restore partition and installed a non WGA copy of XP and charged him £200 for the privalige of his bodging!

I got hold of the machine due to the WGA problems and couldnt believe what the idiot had done i installed an OEM Vista using his product key and away it went

Any 'expert' claiming 'xp is so much better than vista' is sure sign of an idiot that I wouldn't let touch mine. It roughtly translates to 'I dont know how to use vista, so therefore xp is better'

Ghost allows you to add service packs and various other updates to image files, as well as installing software.
However, you need the Corporate version to be able to pull that off.

As far as speed goes, yes it's network for under 10 minute restore times.

I do have a Tosh Satellite here though that can restore a 6.3GB image (compressed to 3.2GB using Ghost's own compression) in 12m 37s when run from a bootable DVD-R (Taiyo Yuden).

I've noticed that the newer Tosh's ain't so quick, but I put that down to the fact they use those wanky Matsushita drives these days.
