feeling guilty and angry
« on: 22 October 2009, 09:59:34 »

As some of you know i make my living as a dj  and do loads of different kinds of work.
one of the things i do is school  and local community centre discos at very favorable rates.

The school that BOTH my children go to has asked me to do a 2 hour disco for halloween and i have replied with a flat no and now i am feeling guilty as hell.

the reason i have said no is my son is in primary 5  and has been bursting into tears in the classroom and blowing his top at what seems to be frustration and anger
While i agree this is  unacceptable behaviour no one untill now has bothered to communicate this information home to me.

he has had no consistency with teachers as they seem to always be off sick long term and supply teachers get put in to replace them. he now has a teacher who is suggesting my son is just lazy and unwilling to do the work while at the same time he is being tested by the school psycologist  for dyslexia  and his teacher knows this but wont get off his back.
for example  his homework used to take him 3 hours  and a session of crying  switched to the computer for homework and its done in 10 mins  however his teacher refuses to grade him highly on it because it was done on the computer and not hand written.
ffs cut him some slack  >:(

anyway needless to say i am furious but untill we get the results of the testing my hands are tied.
I do feel the school is failing a bright young lad  and i  seem to be powerless to prevent it.

i have stopped having anything to do withthe school  ie helping with school lunches  open days  the pta  etc as i worry i will snap at someone while i am there   hence the reasson i said no to the school disco but i feel soooo guilty for doing so.

Doug
ps other schools have asked me to do discos for them too and i have said no as it would kill me not to do my local school that my kids attend  and do another school

When i was at school i used to get better grade because it was nicely formatted from a PC. Guess its changed since late 90's, i was about the only one doing my work on PC then.

I was the same i have (do) have shite hand writing and used a PC. But this was secondary school. Primary is all about hand writing i guess  :-/

Schools can be very frustrating for parents of kids who may be perfectly normal but err towards manual work.

My yougest is very academic and the school love him. My eldest on the other hand is shall we say more hands on like me. He will work all his life in a manual job and I can see he will do ok, as have I. However because of this the school give him hell because his hand writing etc. is not up to much and he does not like reading, although he can read well enough.

Schools do not seam able to do with kids who are not academic. I think this is because they are not allowed to do woodwork and metalwork anymore (which I did very well in)
I am sure many kids like myself are far happier working with there hands than using PC's etc.

As long as they have the basic reading writing abilities and are encouraged to do well at other things, most kids will turn out fine. schools etc. just have to stop 'protecting' them from everything.

Speak to the head teacher and let him/her know why you have done this. :y

Mate, I think you are entirely on the moral high ground here.  If the school is failing to communicate problems your kid is having to you then I would be of the same mind.  Why do a favour for a mate that doesn't hold up their end of the bargain?

The fact that a 3 hour homework assignment can be done in 10 mins on the computer is a fairly sure sign of some kind of dsylexia, I would have though that education professionals could spot that easily..... :-/

as long as his homework is done regardless of hand written or pc surely makes no difference to grading it, if its done its done. The school were my partners son goes they tell the kids to use the computer  to do the homework and just a bit of writting on what they have done ????. i suppose it depends on the area and county but would have thought that it should all be the same
