like anywhere else you are either lucky or unlucky - last year I took my car to a garage offering MOT's for £19.99 and it passed, I checked the MOT online when I got home and the b*st**d had put advisers on totalling around £1500 worth of work - took it somewhere else this year and it only needed a track rod end!

Why would he do this ?.If there was any advisories he should have given you the sheet pointing these out. Some stations are tougher than others. On my yearly MOT i had a advisory on corroded brake pipe but on my 6 month MOT(i have to have 2 a year) there were non.Advisories are only the MOT testers views on what might need to be done or what he thinks may need further investigation.
My old Mig had 15 advisories for the same things on 7 MOT's but always passed(local council like the taxis to be perfect).Non of these were dangerous but just for silly things.

He didn't give me the sheet and if I hadn't checked online I wouldn't have known and I have no idea why he did it unless he thought that either I would bring it back this year and he would "remind" me of last year's advisors such as spring mountings and suspension mountings - he even noted an exhaust that was starting to blow (it was the heat shield on the cat starting to fall off!) or he thought Iwas from the Ministry as I insisted on sitting in the viewing area while logged on the internet on my laptop

If he thought you were from VOSA he would have given you the orange advisory sheet and done everything by the book.I would have gone back demanding the sheet and asked why he never gave you the sheet,if he got funny i would have reported him to Vosa. The idea of giving you the orange sheet is so that you can book yourself into a garage of your choice to have the reported faults checked or repaired if necessary. If there was a advisory on low brake pads and you never received the advisory sheet or you never check these yourself there could have been more problems in a short time.

I would go straight to VOSA with this information and make an official complaint. You are entitled to a copy of the advisory sheet, they are required to supply it and it is unacceptable for them to make online entries without informing you.

Its my recollection that the pass cert also has a box - 'advisory note issued? - yes/no' option.  Check the pass cert to see what it says there...

I suspect the branch is attempting to meet targets and using the advisory sheet as a means of paper verifying them to their head office....

.... and contact VOSA and advise!   ;)

the garage isn't part of a chain - an independant trying to look like part of a chain - and I get the feeling that he "buys" in work by offering cheap mot's and finding work that gullible people will spend money on.   The owner was the tester and he pointed out that I needed a new exhaust because it was split - I pointed out that the heat shield was hanging off the cat but someone who didn't know might have said replace it.   I know I should have reported him but this year I took my other half's low mileage Astra there and it passed no problem so she got a cheap Mot.

Having chatted to my mate who does my MOT's at the last one he was telling me that they have to buy packs of paper and these packs only have about 10 advisory sheets from 100 sheets of paper ::) ::)
