I've got no money, 'cos I've been unemployed for nearly 2 years. Bear that in mind when you attempt to solve my problem.
Years ago, I got interested in genealogy, and started researching my family. I bought some family tree software. Then I lost interest. A few months ago, some "new" relatives contacted me, so I started all over again. But I had some problems with my family tree software. It turned out that it wouldn't run on XP - I'd bought it when I used W2K.
The only working W2K system I have left is upstairs in my son's room - he uses it for games when he's here.
So what I want is to be able to remotely access the W2K computer from my XP computer in my office. We have a fairly reliable home network, so file transfer isn't a problem. If the upstairs computer was on XP, there's built in remote facilities, but they're not in W2K.
Is there any free software available which allows remote desktop over a (workgroup) LAN? I've tried LogMeIn.com, which works, but my broadband connection is rubbish, so this isn't a good solution.
Working upstairs isn't on, buying new family tree software isn't on, and free family tree software doesn't give me the facilities I require.
Any suggestions?
