Computer Network Solution needed
« on: 02 June 2010, 20:58:54 »

I've got no money, 'cos I've been unemployed for nearly 2 years.  Bear that in mind when you attempt to solve my problem.

Years ago, I got interested in genealogy, and started researching my family.  I bought some family tree software.  Then I lost interest.  A few months ago, some "new" relatives contacted me, so I started all over again.  But I had some problems with my family tree software.  It turned out that it wouldn't run on XP - I'd bought it when I used W2K.

The only working W2K system I have left is upstairs in my son's room - he uses it for games when he's here.

So what I want is to be able to remotely access the W2K computer from my XP computer in my office.  We have a fairly reliable home network, so file transfer isn't a problem.  If the upstairs computer was on XP, there's built in remote facilities, but they're not in W2K.

Is there any free software available which allows remote desktop over a (workgroup) LAN?  I've tried LogMeIn.com, which works, but my broadband connection is rubbish, so this isn't a good solution.

Working upstairs isn't on, buying new family tree software isn't on, and free family tree software doesn't give me the facilities I require.

Any suggestions?

There are a few you just need a remote desktop program. but why not just install it to a second partition on your current pc?

I found http://www.realvnc.com/ handy for monitoring my daughters pc to ensure she went to bed  :y

Second partition won't solve the problem - I'd be constantly re-booting to check my e-mail and get on with my job search.  That's why I don't want to work upstairs.

VNC appears to work over the internet rather than across a LAN.  My internet connection is truly awful - at the moment, following some line problems, BT have got it restricted to a download speed of 150kbps.  It's supposed to correct itself after 3 days, but it's been stuck there for 9 days, and I haven't got the strength to argue with the Demon (won't)helpdesk. :( :( :(

I used VNC over my LAN just stick the IP address of the local IP address on the other PC and it connected no problems at all :y

VNC works over the LAN, not needing internet. Its not the fastest, but it is free :y

Will the Geneology s/w install on your XP PC under a compatibility mode? Or another option is as a virtual machine on your XP, using tools like MS Virtual PC or VMWare Server (VM option will need a bucketload of memory)

Right - I'll give it a go - the website isn't all that informative.

The s/w installs, it just doesn't work properly.  I contacted the agents for the original manufacturer, but they wouldn't sell me the upgrade version of it which had been modified to work under XP - they withdrew it last year, and now want to sell me expensive modern stuff.

I'll research compatibility modes - can't remember anything about it.  And I don't know anything about running local VM systems - I don't have a server, and the only VM test environments I've seen ran from a server (I think).  Anyway, my system is overloaded and needs a rebuild, and I'm frightened of breaking it.  But thanks for the suggestion - I'll research it. :) :) :)

http://www.realvnc.com as mentioned in the first reply, will do what you want , but it has to be installed to both PCs (client/server) and when you connect use the local address (given by ipconfig from a DOS prompt)

Another vote for VNC. I think that'll do what you want. :y

Thank you, gentlemen.  RealVNC does the job very nicely, and the presentation, in its own viewer, is far superior to that of LogMeIn.com which runs in a browser and doesn't have brilliant resolution.

try pressing full screen button, it looks fine then. As for speeds I control a home pc via my iPhone on logmein, with a 3G connection it's fine. I've even used it on GPRS (56k) and it's still useable

Tried full screen - still fuzzy.  Readable, but fuzzy.  But response time is unacceptable because my so-called broadband is running at dial-up speed, and we're  running 3 computers on this crap line.

Out of curiosity J (cos I am a nosey old B.) what facilities are you after from your genealogy s/w that the free stuff won't give you? Although the problem has been solved --- I am more into the genealogy problems, having been researching my past reprobates for the last 30 years.
