Just my 2 cents worth. I would look at the HTC Desire before you make your mind up, Its the best choice of smartphone right now. I would recommend the HTC HD2 like I have, but Windows Mobile is a love or hate thing for some people its not the right choice.

The Desire runs Android and is more user friendly and getting better all the time. Good Specs, Good Hi Res AMOLED Screen!!

In my oppinon the iPhone is a baby toy and not a good one at that, take the appstore away and what are you left with!! Poop!!! No Spare batterys!! Lo Res Very Poor Screen!! No Expandable Memory!! Poor Build Quality!! Bab Camera!! No Flash!! Locked down at every turn by Apple!! I can go on!!  :y

HTC are not perfect but are in another league to apple in my honnest oppinion.  :y

As for the X10, I was looking forward to this, thought It might be my next phone but now its out its just looks slow and glitchy to me, and it runs an old version of Android OS.

So now hoping and preying HTC Decide to launch the "HTC Evo" in the UK not just USA which is a 4G 8 Megapixel Superphone on Andriod with HDMI TV Output!!!! May be waiting a while though!!!

Nothing good has come out of HTC for about 3yrs, sadly.  The get the headline specs, but spectacularly manage to make a mess of it, BTC Touch Pro being a prime example - the specs are fantastic, but the package is truely awful!!

iPhone's hardware falls over spectacularly on the phone section. It has a weak signal.

WM6.5 is dead. WM7 isn't here. Android struggles not to be a has-been. Symbian has fallen behind. iPhone OS from v3 upwards works better than the competition, and is far more stable.

Any Smartphone relies on its Apps, and App Store makes this easy.

Yes, I think Apple have closed it too much, but then thats the way Apple works, be it Macs or iPhones.

iphone. Anything else is pretending to be an iphone but isn't. No comparision. I have had pretty well every phone at one stage or other and the iphone dumps on all of them from a great height.

My phone doesn't pretend to be an iPhone, it eats them for breakfast!

Your statement is wrong really, I think you mean anything else is trying to beat the iPhone, which is true but that has been done many times by many phones, its the appstore which hasn't been beaten. YET!

Please don't get me started as you will loose!! hehe

I dislike Apple products with a passion, but would, sadly, have to concede that the iPhone beats the smartphone competition on most fronts, even before the App Store was launched.

If Windows Mobile had a better hardware manufacturer, that would have been a serious competitor, but sadly only HTC really, and they lost their way a few years back (bit of a 1 or 2 hit wonder).  HTC spent too much time with their eye off the ball trying to make Windows more iPhone like, and trying to get Android to work.

Nokia have 2 OSes, none of them particularly suited to touchscreen use.

SE use HTC for their top notch smartphones, with the problems that entails.

Yes, crApple don't allow memory upgrades, and make battery replacement a pain.  Fairly typical of their close mentality.  But if thats the price to pay for stability/speed/usability......

No matter what handset, Windows Mobile is dead. Used to be a huge fan with older handsets, but latest stuff churned out from HTC now is crap. It has the spec but just does not work, my phone has 196mb of RAM but still runs like poo.

I have tried Android but its no way near ready, iPhone is way ahead of the competition.

Got HTC HD, HD2, Desire, Google Nexus, loads of latest Nokia's  all in the phone pot at work, and i don't like any of them!

Think were always going to agree to disagree. Think people get blinded by the iPhone's slick UI and forget about all its shitness and shortfalls.

I could reel them all off be we all know what they are, if you choose to ingore them thats up to you.

Not saying Android & WM don't have issues but iPhone is just the same old shit with the same old icons, I would be bored in a few days!!  :y

I must admit that, even after 18 years working in the mobile phone industry, I have problems appreciating why people need these bloated phones.  ;)

For me, a mobile needs to be with me all the time and primarily gets used for voice calls and messaging, so it must be small, light, have a good battery life (the best part of a week) and be usable for the above.

I have a proper camera for taking photos, a proper PC for running "apps" and a netbook to do same if I happen to be out and about.

If I'm in a situation where I can stop and send a mail or do some surfing I can get the "proper" computer out rather than mess about with keys 1/3rd the size of my fingers and a poxy touch screen.

The thing that gets me about the i-phone, having used one a little, is that it is, IMHO, utterly rubbish for voice calls and SMS/MMS messaging. Speech quality is appalling and the messaging support was clearly an afterthought.

So, put as many bells and whistles as you like on it. If it doesn't function properly as a phone, it's a dead loss, IMHO.

Is it only me who's still mourning the passing of the 6310i?  ;D

No! Brilliant phone!

Its downside, for my needs, were lack of email and web. So I used to carry an iPaq around, paired to phone.  Then I decided to get a combined device, and that was me hooked on smartphones - simply one device rather than 2.  The compromise was battery life, which was 3 or 4 days on my 2nd HTC phone.

When that died, I stuck with similar, got a HTC Touch Pro - bloody appallingly bad phone.  Brief fling with an Experia X1, every bit as bad.  Even tried one of the Android ones for a couple of days, thats hopeless (both the HTC hardware, and the buggy OS).

All this time, Mrs TheBoy's gayPhone did everything she needed from it, and did it without fuss, messing around, or crashing.  The compromise is battery life again (daily charge needed), and a suspect phone reception (about the same as the poor reception on HTC devices - fine in good signal, poor in weak).

For smartphones, cem, it really depends on what you value, and what you can compromise on. None of them are perfect all-rounders...

I turned 3g off on my iPhone after a day. It helps battery life a little (granted it still needs a daily charge) but more importantly it has pretty much solved the signal issues.
I can be sat in one spot and have no signal, turn off 3g and have full reception, albeit, edge or a normal signal.
It's still fine for emailing and tbh browsing isn't a whole lot slower than on 3g.

Which is why your 'factual' input really doesn't count for much.  Until you have an un-biased view, your opinion becomes jaded, and therefore, useless.

You are like the Apple FanBoy's who wont touch anything 'IBM based', but in reverse.  It's quite frankly pathetic.

Nobody who has any knowledge can say the iPhone is as bad as you claim.  It is an excellent multimedia device.  Apple should unleash it a little though.  That's the way Apple work, and work they do!

I'd personally never have one, because I like to use a phone as a phone.  I'll ultimately have to own one of these 'stupid piss poor attempts of being a proper computer' in the near future, as there wont be a choice.  Until then, I'll stick with my phone....... and use it as a phone.

And no, I'm not in my 60's and I'm not a technophobe.  I'm 28, and I'm a Computer Hardware Engineer.

As a phone, its not the best. Some nice touches on it for usability, but poor reception in weak areas ensures its not a great phone.  Few smartphones are to be honest - cramming so much into small packaging, just seems they end up compromising the radio.

So if you want a phone to be a phone only, the older Nokias (6210/6310 era) still rule...
