Council employees taking the pee!
« on: 02 September 2010, 18:28:20 »

I received a letter today from my County Council environmental dept.; telling me that because I usually make only half a refuse-bag of household waste per week I wont be able to have my wheelie bin emptied weekly (as is normal here) instead, I`ll have to store my refuse until I can "completely fill a bag".

I live in a rural area and the urban wheelie bin mechanised lorry doesn`t make collections here, the bags instead are collected be a three (yes three) men crew in a transit-tipper, stopping at the roadside to collect our black-bags left inside the coucil provided wheelie bins.....the reason cited for this new restriction, is that the council dept received a complaint from an employee, stating that my making 'just' half a bag of waste means that the council bin-men have to reach 'too' far down into the bin thus putting their health and safety in jeopardy! :o

Lord preserve us, their job is considered dangerous, but it involves exactly the same action that the customer makes to gently deposit the bag into the bin in the first place......Public service jobs used to be just that: "service"...so, what happened? :-[

In that case Debs I would place an upturned container in the bottom of the wheelie bin to resolve that one! :D :D ;)

But I suppose the officious council will still deem that wrong!! ::) ::) ::)

its beyond belief what passes for councils  nowadays!!
think i would be buying a cheap party pack of balloons and putting an inflated one in the top of the refuse bag, then tying it up, only to make it lighter for them of course!! this would also stop the [poor overworked  bin man having to climb into the bin to reach it!!

Actually....it's a clever tactic Debs, obviously they want you to produce more waste from buying stuff you don't need, thereby boosting the economy, aiding the deficit, paying more tax and saving their jobs :y

Debs I work for the waste disposal department for my council and what there saying is total crap.
The van that is coming to you is the street cleansing(sweeper) my council send these smaller van to collect from hard to get to farms etc.
You can however charge the council for you to dispose of your own waste by means of deducting from you council tax for your time and tranport costs :y

What happened ?
The EU AND Nu Liebore - the state became the masters and the civilians became the servants. These irritating little episodes are just their way of letting us know, or reminding us in case we forget. I would like to think that now we have rid ourselves of the scourge of the (Champagne) socialists things will start to revert back to how they should be, but Im not holding my breath tbh. ::)

What an appalling tale. ONLY in Britain.

I can tell you right now that this sort of nonsense has nothing to do with the EU. That is just a giant SMOKESCREEN by people who need something to blame this sort of nonsense on instead of taking responsibility for it.

The culprits?. Why it is YOU. Yes YOU the people of Britain. YOU have let this sort of Nonsense proliferate and haven't taken to the streets to get things changed. Instead YOU write on car forums. The powers that be do not read OOF to check whether what they are doing is acceptable.

I can tell you that I see stuff being done here in Spain by workmen EVERY DAY that would cause Britain to be shut down. e.g. Angle grinding slabs in the street with no goggles, ear defenders etc.

I don't condone unsafe practices but believe me this isn't "FROM the EU" rather from YOURSELVES. That is why Britain has the most CCTV, daftest rules on what can/can't be done etc etc etc.

Rant over, but please take to the streets :-[ :-[

Imo the EU makes rules/regulations/directives etc. on these matters - huge fines for "excessive landfill" and not enough recycling etc. The rest of the EU has the sense to adapt the attitude that we have politicians etc whose job it is to make rules, and we the citizens have the job of completely ignoring them.
In this country however we are daft enough to take them seriously, and in fact it suited the agenda of the last govt. to enforce all this crap on us as a means of cementing the mindset that the state in all its guises must be obeyed and its rules adhered to.

It's very much a case of the EU barking and the gutless swine here keeking themselves at the sound.

I very much blame the organ grinder in this case V - more so than the monkeys. :y

According to Eurobarometer, the EU is at a record low in approval ratings. Fewer than half of its citizens regard it as “a good thing” and only 42 per cent have confidence in its institutions.

Surprise, surprise. [Second time I've used that phrase tonight!  ;) ]

Totally agree, i think it's only fair that you reduce your payments by the same ammount they have reduced the service. What hacks me off is that if you were a family of 6 or 7 you could ask for an extra wheelie totally free of charge and create twice the work for them, yet you save the work and get a reduced service....... :-/
