Yes, this is what we need...

Clearly.. more civvies who believe it is their god given right to police the roads and enforce speed limits..

I bet these are the same people who do 40mph everywhere and get irate if you overtake them:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-11398087

(It was just on the news, so presumably there's a newer article.. but that one will do ;))

It would be very interesting to find out how this stands in the eyes of the law. It states people have given points on there licence, does that mean I can report another motorist and they will receive points ?

Something wrong with this.

According to the news report on TV (BBC News) - if you're caught three times then the police pay you a visit and, yes, issue points/fine/etc..

It makes me want to take off my plates and drive around at speed just to p*ss them off .. but that would be childish  :-[

I particularly liked the way the TV report showed them standing at the side of a dead straight road with no turnings/driveways/etc.. ;D

But that does mean that the police are completly accepting the word of these people (member of public) and issueing points, surely that cannot be legal.

Well, they've been issued with some kind of combined camcorder & radar gun device that records both speed & video evidence.. which presumably is admissible in court; as long as they are 'certified' for that device (and as long as that device holds a valid calibration certificate and certification for use).

I'm betting Mr Loophole could get you off in two seconds flat, though..

Is this not legalising vigilantes ? Surely if the public can be used for this purpose, then why not for "other" purposes.

That was my exact first thought when the piece came on TV.. it does seem like the start of a slippery slope - especially when the preceding article was about planned reductions in workforce in the Police & CPOs..

Big Society. Do away with paid public employees and replace them with unpaid private individuals. Marvellous, think of the billions that can be saved.

To get the public sympathy for the "its wrong to speed" they need to sort out speed limits, removing the daft ones (like the 50mph from here to Banbury, and the 50mph one from here to Buckingham).

I'm all for 30mph in built up areas, as long as not on a trunk road.

The R-souls who do 70 in 30/40 limits, well, you will never change their habits. They will always do that.

20mph zones, again I don't agree with.  If parents and teachers got up off their fat, lazy asses, taught their kids the Green Cross Code, and didn't turn the road outside the school into a carpark so kids have to cross between cars, the old fashioned 30mph limit would not be an issue.

If stupid people get mown down because they are too busy texting, PSPing etc, well, at least they would degrade the gene pool further like their parents did.

Ditto to that.. what annoyed me the most about the 20 limit they put down my old 'main road' - complete with speed humps that were too tall for my car - was that the people who didn't pay any attention to the limit were almost invariably mothers in 4x4s with one child, doing 40mph down there because they were late for school!

Drove me nuts, and they used to overtake (wrong side of the road, over the speed limit) regularly as they could just float over the humps I had to practically stop for. >:(

Get rid of the useless suits sat in South Northants Council offices, and replace them with useful people, like suited coppers. Specials if needs be.  But don't waste resources on Hobby Bobbys.

For this debate, the Police have given local communities around here (temporary) equipment to catch speeders - I've had a letter from the Police as my car was caught speeding through a village (another silly limit, should be a 40, she tells me (she had the car that day) she was only just breaking limit, as it was a downhill section). That was 5yrs ago...  ...guess media have just cottoned on to it.

I agree Aaron, and I think the very loophole is that the equipment is not being operated by warrented police officers.  This needs to be challenged in a court of law.

This is yet another attempt to reduce uniformed police numbers by cheap skate, substandard, methods using non-qualified personnel! >:( >:(

It has nothing to do with the big society gimmick.I t ahs been happening for about 5 years. As said, Im sure a decent solicitor would take them apart if they tried to prosecute as a result of it. I dont think they do tbh,I thibk its a scare tactic for the gullible.

You should tell the BBC that, because that's what they were reporting it as being a part of earlier ;)

So if I grass on all the to$$ers around here who drive off every evening with a phone clamped to their ear, will they get a visit from the feds too?

This is placing enforcement in the hands of the very people who should have nothing to do with it. Busybodies who have nothing better to do than get hung up on how everybody else should be behaving.

Just like politics - if you aspire to do the job, that should automatically disqualify you from doing so.
