Done similar in the past.  I used a spare can of magnolia or mushroom or something to take the sting out the vivid colour (it was just gash paint that was in the garage) then finished with a proprietry topcoat.   Worked out fine in a couple of coats...

You read my mind H21!......
I have (nearly) a full 2.5 litre can of Travis Perkins 'Mongolia' to hand; bought in error a year or two ago and `was non-returnable: I could use that first, then use Dulux as the finish coat/s. :y

Thats the colour of my step daughters bedroom which in the new year will be decorated to more pastel colours. I have in the past used this as an undercoat http://www.polycell.co.uk/products/polycell_3_in_1_basecoat.jsp

I used it on top of a deep blood red colour wall to decorate with a pale lilac. I coat of polycell, one coat of lilac; it worked well and for good measure I did a second coat of lilac for durability. I will certainly be using it again. Whilst B&Q might be cheaper etc I also factor in my time and frustration levels as I apply the third, fourth and fifth coats and hence don't mind spending a little more if the jobs gets done quicker. Think along the lines of the right tool for the right job.  :y :y

HTH and good luck

:y go for a good quality paint,as in most things in life you get what you pay for,we've used cheap stuff in the past and some of it has poor coverage

:y Thanks for the advice and recommendations, everybody.
I like the look of the Polycell 3 in 1 and the Gliddens 10L. matt-white; now, I just need a good local-source for elbow grease! ;D

for preperation i would use tetron filler, its easier to rub down than polycell. 80 grit scratch, and dulux caulk. buying direct online from dulux is a bit cheaper as well.
