Best advice I can give is get down to your local surgery and ask to speak to the 'Stop Smoking Advisor'. You can discuss your quit plan and go for the best treatment for stopping.

I gave up just under 2 years ago with SWMBO, although I since restarted she hasn't but I don't smoke anywhere near to what I used to and can go a day or two without one. I'm due to see the SSA next week to start a new treatment to quit again :y

Oh and if you feel the need to munch once you've stopped try grapes, carrot sticks, anything but crisps and chocolate as you'll pile the pounds on and walk the dog a lot ;) :y

Cheers welung.. all advice taken in but if we ever meet and I have put on a few pounds you will know I was eating the choc bars instead of fruit  ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

I used to love a smoke, smoked approx. 40 rollups a day and couldnt imagine living without it. But in May 2000 I convinced myself that it was going to kill me sooner rather than later and when I had brainwashed myself sufficiently it suddenly became a lot easier than all my previous attempts.
I hate smoking now, I think its disgusting. ;D
As Albs says IMO. I had to hate it to give up, in fact I did hate it. I hated the smell on me, I hated the smell in the car, I hated the smell of ash tray that I couldn't smell but others could a mile off, I hated even more the fact that someone was profiting out of my inevitable Ill health by selling me a potently addictive drug. Legal drug dealing. Hate the fact others would voice their disgust at me unwittingly blowing smoke in their direction and wondering what the hell their problem was me smoking in the same room as them, i was completely oblivious to it all.

Find a way or an angle, like your wires health or even your own, get angry and just decide, and I don't mean "just decide" like it's easy, it isn't. I mean DECIDE! No rather more!

Very best of belligerent luck. :y

Gum worked for me, although it is to an extent addictive if you stay on it too long. I think the NRT products in general can help if you have already decided to give up, but they wont do the job for you. :y
You will be amazed though how much healthier and fitter you feel in the not too distant future. ;)

Been on the gum for 2 1/2 years now. I love it. ;D

Stopping smoking is easy .... I did it loads of times  ::) ::) ::)
Serioulsy, do as Welung suggests & seek help from a smoking cessation course. I used Zyban via the cessation group at work, but Mrs Andy B used its replacement of Champix. These drugs do help, but you still need to want to stop.
Good luck!  :y  :y  :y  :y

Coming up 9 years for me.  :-X

2 very good friends of mine have managed to kick it, and stay kicked off for a few years, where previous attempts failed.

1 had to for health reasons - he just kicked it without help. His wife put aside all the money that was going on tobacco into a jar (not a non-substantial sum), and he'd use that to buy himself a little gift for himself.

The other guy went had had his head screwed with (hypnotism) - he has described what he remembers from the (single) session. It seems his mind afterwards swapped the need for nicotine for a need for water. He drank water like it was going out of fashion for a few weeks, but he always said that since the session, he never seriously craved another fag. But I know another guy who has used the same hypnotist, unsuccessfully.

My oldest brother used to smoke no end, but always just seemed to have the ability to stop when he desired, and then would start again years later, and give up again.

Everybody, I believe, is different in their needs to enable them to give up.

Hypnosis is interesting, I can't understand it and don't believe in it, but would like experience it just to see.  :-?

There's a theory the individual needs to be susceptible or accepting of hypnosis  :-? Some just aren't built that way.

But who cares, what ever works.... :y

One of the easiest ways to give up smoking is to stop buying them in the first place !
I can say that with tongue in cheek because I have never had one so don't have the craving for them.
I am too old to start on them now.
The other reasons for not starting are that they killed my mum at the age of 53 and I don't want to smell like an ashtray either.
Good luck with stopping and if you don't want to give the government any more tax just get a £10 note roll it up and set fire to it,you have still burnt your money away but the government gets nothing from it.

Just to add, retired lady over the road smoked all her life and gave up instantly after hypnosis. All other avenues failed.

Like TB said, everyone one is different.  I managed to quit for several years cold turkey.  The second time I used lozenges which you put under your tongue, they give you a little hit rather than a steady stream like patches which I found useless and always falling off.  I got an endless supply through the NHS quitting service for next to nothing  :y
