2 very good friends of mine have managed to kick it, and stay kicked off for a few years, where previous attempts failed.
1 had to for health reasons - he just kicked it without help. His wife put aside all the money that was going on tobacco into a jar (not a non-substantial sum), and he'd use that to buy himself a little gift for himself.
The other guy went had had his head screwed with (hypnotism) - he has described what he remembers from the (single) session. It seems his mind afterwards swapped the need for nicotine for a need for water. He drank water like it was going out of fashion for a few weeks, but he always said that since the session, he never seriously craved another fag. But I know another guy who has used the same hypnotist, unsuccessfully.
My oldest brother used to smoke no end, but always just seemed to have the ability to stop when he desired, and then would start again years later, and give up again.
Everybody, I believe, is different in their needs to enable them to give up.
