Insurance, just how do they calculate it?
« on: 19 February 2011, 12:51:53 »

My insurance is due up next month and Zurich have decided that I am an extra £300 risk over last year, same car for 10 years and 23 years NCD.........

So I take my £799 quote and start getting quotes from those annoying TV add people, best quote from a reputable company is £450. Not bad i'm thinking, out of curiosity I change from a 2.5 to a 3.0 to see what the premium is, £423 from the same company....

So wait i'm considered a safer risk in a more powerful car, just off to get quotes for some V8 muscle cars, should be able to get it down to £300   ;D ;D

How do they calculate it? That's easy, they dream up a ridiculously expensive figure & then double it! ;D ;)

God only knows how they work it out, im 26 no NCB because this was my first insurance and it was £610 for myself, add a female to it and it dropped to about £510 and that was for a 3.0 elite, fully comp with business travel  :D

basically your no claims bonus now is not actually 23 years or 26 years, its either "over 3 years", "over 5 years" or "over 9 years" depending on the company

so basically with one company you could have 4 years ncb or 24 years, and both fall into the "over 3 years" if thats how they do it, and they'd charge the same

One "trick" is to quote a stupidly high renewal, as many folks don't ever check  .... it is often possible to see a decent quote from the same insurers by getting a new quote on-line.

Their "excuse" is that a "new" policy taken "on-line" has an "introductory discount" .. what it really means is "we rip off loyal customers".

Same as the "what is your best quote I'm sure we can match it" line ... if the quote you gave me is the best .. how can you drop it ??? .. so I go elsewhere, after telling them just what I think :)

Exception to the renewal rule being Swiftcover last year when both of ours were due... Was the cheapest quote I could find and even cheaper than as a new customer :y :y :y

Oh yes i'm well aware about the quote high and hope you just auto-renew trick, and about how NCB works, I just really don't get why a 3.0 is cheaper than a 2.5
when no other details have change.

Many variables:
Age
Sex
Claim history
Points on license
Car  (insurance group + history of claims on such car)
Post Code
Job title
Marital status
Where the car is parked
Mileage
Modifications
Plus whatever I've forgotten to mention..

And yeah it's pretty much standard practice for insurers to try to get some more £££ out of you come renewal time if you're lazy.

I renewed recently and my insurer tried to hike the price up on renewal.  Spent 10 minutes on the phone and I paid 60% of the price they quoted me in the renewal pack with the same company.

Changed from a 2.5 v6 auto to an ex plod 3.2 special and insurance went down £35 despite adding the mrs who has an automatic license so is technically a learner in a manual car. Madness,,,,, just keep shopping around. Changed the mrs Jeep insurance and that went down as well. Aviva insurance seem to favour bigger cars, had a silly quote for her on a renault megane and a good one on a jeep !

silly as it sounds, it could be just that the accident statistics point to the smaller engined cars having more accidents.

I'd guess that the accident rate for a  1.1 saxo is higher than for a 4.0 jag, (say 1 in a 1000 cars, rather than 800 in a 1000 for the saxo  ::)  )
so all other things considered equal, a smaller engine is a bigger risk

or they could just think of a number and double it.

A few years back my ex got a quote from Shellas Wheels for her Rover, when asked out of interest, how much more to add Me to it, it dropped by over 200 quid,  :D

I dont know how that works for a women only insurance.

Outside my Traders Insurance tend to keep one car on swiftcover so I can retain my NCB.

You know that actually sounds feasible, mind you so does the second option :D
