Rear shock top mounts changed yesterday and it looks like that has stopped the knocking from the rear of the estate, oil change done before the drive to Scotland this Friday for granddaughter time this weekend, must find time to correct the sat-nav on the estate after the last Scotland trip.

Fitted new wishbones with polys in new droplinks and unexpectedly track rod ends that all 4 rubbers had split on them.

That will teach me to fit cheap and nasty ones last time ;D ;D ;D

Forgot to say that while tyres were inflating I had the bonnet up checking for leaks/smoke etc[engine was running for fag lighter powered compressor]and when it came down onto tickover heard a new noise from front of engine-sort of a "catching"type noise.held a socket extension on cam belt cover stuck my thumb on the end and put my ear to it,it's not a loud noise and can't be heard until engine settles to idle but appears to me to be slightly louder on off side than near side.So cam belt shredding and catching on cover or tensioner/pulleys giving up?Damn car seems to have a knack of breaking without actually going anywhere!!

More likely that the auxiliary belt was under an unusually heavy strain due to the air compressor loading up the electrical system.

Mine makes a noise like that after a cold start (and Gixer has the same concern). The noise goes away after a minute or so in a car that is in regular use. Your battery is probably still low on charge so the noise might continue  :-\

If you have any worries about it then it only takes a moment to slip the aux belt off. Run the engine without it for a minute or so & see if the noise is still there.
