This week I did what I promised myself I would do.
With my new garage equipment I raised the car right up so all 4 corners were high off the ground to really allow me to very comfortably crawl underneath.
Last week I cleaned the springs, brake pipes, and coated them in Supertrol as far as I could. This week, with the car high in the air, I checked the whole underside from front to rear. I was delighted to find that apart from some surface rust on a very few components such as suspension arms, which I wire brushed off, there was nothing to worry about. I even followed DG instructions and took the sill covers off; once again nothing major to worry about. Wire brushed the surface rust, treated everything with Kurust, then covered well with Hammerite. Then I used two cans of Supertrol into every nook and cranny, every opening in the chassis members, and along the sills. The full length of the brake pipes, right up to the wheels, I also cleaned and applied more of the Supertrol
I thoroughly rubbed down with an electrical orbital random sander the flat edges of both rear wheel arches to find they have got no worse in terms of surface rust spread, and the metal is all solid, with the exception of just two places beside the rear wheels were some corrosion of metal has made them pitted. But, thoroughly cleaned those up by electric wire brushing, treating front and rear with Kurust, filling with Isopon, and once sanded flat, the primer coats, x3, then top coats, X5 went on, with final lacquer coats.
Whilst underneath I also replaced the fuel filter as I had a spare in stock.
Next week when I get my new supply of Z594 paint I have just got to finish off top coating the final forward edge of the offside rear wheel arch, then lacquering, with T-Cut being done a few days later.
Now I know some will say I wasted my time doing the rear wheel arches, but with how my previous efforts have kept any small amount of rot in check very well, I reckon it is all very worth while as it will keep this Omega running for some time yet!
