Early Volvo autos used Dexron this was changed in later cars[phase 2's?] to JWS 3309 spec oil whether they then changed it again for the Phase 3 I don't know.Rather than do a complete empty/refill many owners do "sump dumps" where they drain out as much as will come out of the drain plug[this obviously leaves fluid in the torque converter etc]and refill with the same amount as comes out,then run it for a few hundred miles before repeating.They say doing this 3 or 4 times changes out all the old fluid and is less of a "shock" to solenoids/seals than a one hit full fluid change.

There were two engine variants in the D4, 5 cylinder single turbo and 4 cylinder twin turbo, Aisin auto box (as per GM FWD in europe) so pretty bulletproof.

As for the Passat, they always remind me of the Goodness Gracious Me sketch, 'bring me the blandest thing on the menu'

Just sorting out getting the box serviced which is a little confusing to get the right information as this car is a 'partial facelift' so I think it needs the AW-1 ATF. Servicing instructions also indicate that it needs VIDA and DICE to reset the adaptations and alter the transmission change counter on the TCM. Doing some research it looks like a lot of owners do a few short distance changes to help get the old fluid out of the system.

 This is next job on the Saab, Trying to find the correct grade for the box, isn't easy, as far as I know, it's 3309/aw-1 oil,
 Which is approx £100,, for 20L on ebay., Will do a dump and flush, 😕

A quick check shows that JWS 3309 is correct grade/spec for the 5 and 6 speed  auto box on Volvos.A"sump dump" will drain approx. 3 litres of fluid.Obviously[I'm sure you know this] make sure that you can remove the refill plug before draining anything.

Got 12L of Volvo 31256775 (Post 2010 Geartronic) from a Volvo dealer, read the same articles on various Volvo forums I think!

Got an MOT pass (no advisories) on the project car, did need a little patch sticking on with the hot metal sparky stick but hey ho, it is 20 years old!

Had to fit an ABS sensor on one of the cars, rained the whole time i fitted it, moment I dropped the car back on the ground the sun came out!

Checked the tyres on the Audi, the fronts are down to just below 4mm so will need changing soon. It’s currently shod with Michelin PS4S and they suit this car so that’s what will be going back on. The Michelin’s ain’t cheap but every Goodyear Eagle I’ve owned has split in the tread groove, I don’t rate Pirelli tyres and the Bridgestone’s that both the Audi and the BMW left the factory on didn’t inspire confidence in the wet.

If that is what works well, makes sense to keep with them.

Get them hot and drive over some coarse sand to add some bite to them.

That said, turn off the nanny and give it some beans. Then buy some actual tyres.

Fitted the new camshaft to Pierre, then went to install the seal only to discover I had been sent one that is far too big.
Nothing is ever quick or straightforward with the little pile of French shite.
