Sorry James, but the use of phrases like 'I am a safe and calm driver' and 'At least 90mph.. truth be known probably more like 100' do not go together. The speed limit is there for a reason. You cannot be in THAT much of a hurry!

The reason is that a non driver introduced it as an experiment and to stop race cars being road tested

100mph would get you in some serious trouble. Obviously if you were camera'd there be no let off. But if there was any doubt over the responsibilty and standard of your driving they would have been following you and measuring your average speed over a set distance, to check the amount of attention you are paying, and regard shown for other road users (lane discipline etc.)

I have seen on these police documentary programs that they won't tend to bother with you under 85mph 70mph  :-X There are so many people openly breaking the speed limit, it wouldn't be feasible to stop everyone!

If the speed limit were raised all you would have is people regularly driving to 100-110mph. The current limit is designed for safety in 'all' conditions and having that little amount of discretion with the local law enforcement is already fair enough.

just for your info, the last time I was done for speeding was by a van parked on a bridge over the M6 and I was traveling at 79mph.

It was an instant fixed penalty. btw you get a sp30 for speeding on roads and a sp50 for speeding on motorways.

An Instant ban is 30 mph over the speed limit ie 100 on a 70 or 80 on a 50 and so forth,

What complete and utter rubbish..... ::)

Would you like me too direct you too a place where you would be educated in motoring law,a police forum.

Just to play devils advocate..

If I was in Germany, doing 140mph on an autobahn (which most drivers there regularly and legally do at all times) - would that make me a non-safe and non-calm driver, compared to doing 90mph on a dead motorway?

On a motorway it is usually hitting a ton that will get you a summons to the local Magistrates Court, hence the reason why so many people end up with Fixed Penalty Notices for doing 99 mph (saves the  aggravation of case papers and a more likely Court appearance). It is however up to the Magistrates to deliver the joyous sentence which in most cases they will unless you can show exceptional circumstances. I seem to remember our beloved NuLabour politician (and former Solicitor General) Harriet Harman MP getting just such a ticket, 99mph on the M4 (well done Thames Valley)   ;)
